So it was just announced that Dallas will be recieving the new tour production of Camelot with Michael York. At first I was less than enthused but now after listening to the soundtrack, it could be good - though I'm still unsure.
Anyone know anthing about this musical? Any good?
How is Michael York? I just know him from Austin Powers. Anyone seen him in anything else?
James Barbour was just cast as Lancelot and I love him, so that's a plus. If it premieres in January, should he still be with the tour by the end of May?
Just curious.

I just got a pain somewhere deep inside.
Mr. York has had a long and distinguished career in film and on stage. If you find a bio for him, I'm sure you'll see things you might want to investigate further.
As for CAMELOT, it is generally acknowledged to have a very beautiful score - some real standards of the Broadway 'songbook'. It is also widely thought to have one of the more overwraught and much too long books. I don't know whether they have tightened the piece for the tour (I doubt it.) All in all, if you haven't seen it, I'd recommend it - if only to expose yourself to one of the most popular pieces in the genre, as well as an icon in the field of entertainment.

Just because . . . and in case others are not aware of him.
I'll just add to this professional overview that I got to meet Mr. York this summer, and he is a completely lovely, honest, direct, enthused, engaged, humble and giving man. A truly honorable man.

Go. Close your eyes and be swept up by wonderous music written by the composer that Andrew Lloyd Webber wishes he was. What a lovely score. Witty lyrics. Even the comedy song is a delight.
Bring a pillow. It's a long book.

DG: I died a little inside when I read that as well.
I had the honor of working with Mr. York (albeit very briefly) when we were both in the cast of the Actors' Fund Benefit reading of Casablanca at the Pantages theater in Los Angeles last year. The cast was chock-full of "celebrities," but the only person I was truly star-struck by was Michael York. I've been a fan of his since I was first shown Franco Zeffirelli's Romeo and Juliet in my 9th grade English class. (Yes, I went to a very cool school.) His Tybalt was absolutely mesmerizing. And of course, as a sci-fi geek, I also loved him in Logan's Run! hehehe Anyway, he is a fantastic actor.
I also have a few friends in this production, who are all extremely talented, so I am pretty confident that this is going to be a wonderful tour.

I adore Michael York (and certainly NOT from Austin Powers). I also happen to love the score of Camelot. I hope this comes somewhere close to here.
(edit: I'm blue. Looks like PA is as close as it gets)

I hope this show has a better Guinivere than on the last tour with Robert Goulet. I went to see it in Kansas City because my aunt was music director for the tour and just...wow. Goulet was great, but Mordred certainly left a lot to be desired.
But Guinivere...hmm. Nice voice, but it was hard to get over the fact that she had a very lazy eye and I was sitting very close to the stage.
Either way, I love the show and I love Michael York. Here's wishing it much success!

Thanks for the feedback. I'll try to make an effort to see this one. He sounds like he is very talented. I asked about him mainly because I couldn't find any audio clips of him singing.
As for my age, I dont think I am terribly young but as for musicals, I have only been listening to them for about a year - so forgive me for not knowing that much about what appears to be a classic. I apologize for performing some blasphemic action by asking about a musical I was not familiar with. I thought that was what this forum was for.

Don't worry, goofy. People are snarky here, that's what we do best!
Camelot's a really well thought-out show...I, too, have yet to see a bad production in it (I was in it this summer, actually!). If you end up seeing the show, enjoy! Tell us how it is.

Goofy - I actually think people made an effort NOT to sound accusatory about your unawareness.
edit - well, some people.

I HAVE seen a bad production. Richard Harris in the tour after Burton left (the revival). He phoned in the performance I saw (Friday night. It should have been better). He sang like this "Iknowwhatmypeoplearethinkingtonightashomethroughttheshadowstheywander..." It was so, so sad as I was seeing the show in the Okeefe Center, where as a kid I had seen Burton - superbly doing the same material.
Sad...
