YES! YES! YES!
This is one of my Top 5 favorite scores of all time. It is a positively INCREDIBLE achievement. AMERICA KICKS UP IT'S HEELS, while inferior, was also better than anything on Broadway in the 80s or 90s for the most part. And Pattie LuPone was KILLER. The two shows are very, very different however... nary a song remains unchanged from version to version.
"You Cannot Let Romance Die" is one of my favorite musical theatre songs of all time.
Incidentally, I asked William Finn this exact question around the time a concert presentation was supposed to be taking place (that was canceled soon thereafter) and he gave a somewhat subdued answer, I think I may have hit a chord. I think this is his favorite of all his scores, as he has said as much, and he just can't figure out how to make it completely work.
