Has anyone out there heard of the Cappie Awards program. And/or is anyone a part of it?

yeah- im really grateful to the cappies program, but i have to say that the whole thing has this pretentious air to it that really irks me sometimes, I guess it also depends on the individual critics and the mentors..the mentor at our last show was just mean and awful and downright rude, it was really disheartening to see...are you a NCA critic?

"Founded in 1999, this path-breaking "Critics and Awards Program" is adding excitement and public acclaim to high school theater. Through the Cappies, high school student critics attend and review each other's shows, publish their reviews in local newspapers, and participate in a year-end, Tonys-style Cappies Gala. "
That’s from the website...basically what it is is a program where high school students review other high school shows, and then at the end of the year there is an awards ceremony at the Kennedy Center in D.C (like the Tony's but for students).
It is a great program, but reason and Penalers are right...it can get political.
My school just had its show and the reviews came out today!!!

Let me know if you have any questions, it might not be the best thing, but it does promote the arts...

Just felt like reviving this post. I am one of the Critics for my school. (Which is in MD and I have to trek to Northern VA to see most shows).
Has anyone ever had thier reviews published? I got selected for the Post this year.
I also hate some of the snobbishness, but so far its not from my mentors, only other critics. But I still love it.

Posted: 12/20/04 at 5:09pmWe just started Cappies for our district. It is so beneficial because you have your peers review you. Also, you tend to become closer to the schools that visit, unless they leave a poor review.

Our school theatre department recently had a debate as to whether or not to join.
The majority wanted to, but I lead the group who was against it.
I am glad that I was part of the decision that lead to us eventually not joining.
In my experience with it, CAPPIES is political and elitist and goes against what high school theatre should be about: community.
And I see many high school shows, and the winners are sometimes so absurd. Last year, the girl who won Best Actress in my region gave one the most horrenous perofrmances I've ever seen, and there were many, many girls who gave much more deserving performaces.
But still, the whole idea of high school theatre awards bothers me.
It is a great concept to bring high school theatre departments together. But a poorly executed concept.
The opposite of creation isn't war, it's stagnation.

Yeah, I think the awards system is absurd, but I still think it is very beneficial. It has helped me with my writing.
I have to admit though, I didn't like having the Cappies come to our school.
I also think that the program is what you make of it, and that if you're looking to enjoy yourself and have fun going to see High School theater, than this is a good way to do it.

Posted: 12/21/04 at 12:54pmMy high school participates in the Helen Hayes Awards, which are a little like the Cappies, but for schools in Westchester, NY and surrounding counties, and a group of judges acome and see the shows and in June there is a big tony-like awrds ceremony. My high school has faired very well with them (winning best overall production and best director two years in a row), but they do get competetive, and sometimes people can be nasty about the whole thing. Posted: 12/21/04 at 1:38pmI'm a co-lead critic for my school in the Greater Cincinnati disctrict of Cappies. Personally, I don't think its worthwhile. Bad shows win awards, undereducated people vote on how "good" a show is (when, in actuality, I wish I could walk out on 90 percent of them), and are forced to write positive reviews for total crap. Cappies needs some major restructuring.
