Is Channing confusing a backstage visit from Merman with seeing Merman in GYPSY? Those two qoutes from Merman are clearly lines from the GYPSY.

The response "Because you're lucky" really isn't funny per se because of anything that's happened in "Gypsy" up until that point.

She's been doing that same act forever. Still love her. The material about Sophie Tucker, Bankhead, Merman goes back decades.
