Hugh Jackman is promoting his movie "The Fountain" (opening Nov. 22) and he was asked about "Carousel" and said this:
>>Any fans of Hugh Jackman's musical theater career still looking for some more? Well, this may be a chance to see Jackman back singing on screen. When asked about the musical Carousel during the press junket for The Fountain, Hugh Jackman responded stating that they did get the rights for it and pre-production is under way.
“We just got the rights for it, so we're now finding director, writer, and I'm very excited about that.”<<<

Hugh is filming the Baz Luhrmann movie with Nicole Kidman starting in March, and he said in another interview that should go through August or September. He plans to film "Wolverine" after that, but he said he wants to "get in shape" for that (and get a director) so he said that may not go until 2008. So where "Carousel" would fit in for filming is anyone's guess.
Hugh Jackman has the craziest schedules! He must be the hardest working man in Hollywood. I'm sure the movie will get made within the next four or so years. Yes, it may be long, but it will be worth it.
Let the casting speculations begin:
Julie Jordan...Jessica Simpson
Carrie Pipperidge...Beyonce
Mr. Snow...Usher
Jigger Craigin...Johnny Depp

Hugh was on "The View" last week with Kate Winslet promoting "Flushed Away" and when they came back from commercial, Barbara Walters said that during the break, Hugh and Kate were saying they wanted to do a musical together. Of course they brushed it off (especially Kate - Hugh just chuckled) - Kate saying "oh it was just banter" but then Barbara asked her to "audition" and sing something! She didn't want to do it and she told Hugh he would have to sing with her. He asked her what her favorite musical was and she couldn't think of one so Hugh said "do you know Singing in the Rain?" which she did - and he started singing - and she joined in, and they sounded MARVELOUS. I would LOVE for Kate to be in one of his movie musicals!
Also, in a recent interview, the writer said Hugh had dinner with Scarlett Johansson and Harvey Weinstein, and all Hugh and Scarlett did at dinner was sing show tunes, including some songs from "Carousel."
I'm convinced Hugh is going to get an "A" list star who can sing to co-star with him in any of his musicals.
