Cast recordings

I was just wondering...
How come "Wedding Singer" & "Drowsy Chaperone" already announced that they will be making Broadway cast recordings when they're still in previews? While "Lestat" (the only one I could think of at the moment) is in previews and isn't making a cast recording anytime soon?
hmm I was just curious...

Just that DROWSEY and WEDDING SINGER have already signed deals with Ghostlight and Sony/BMG. It's possible LESTAT is in negotiations now and will announce a deal soon. Of course if the label execs fear the show will be a turkey they may hold off announcing until it opens.
Even with these announcements made it is possible the label could cancel if the show proves to be a quick failure.
RCA was not obligated to record MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG in 1981 unless the show ran at least 21 performances. When it closed after just 16 Tom Sheppard pleaded with (division president) Bob Summer to proceed with the album anyhow. It took many years but the record did finally pay off.
A year later RCA was to do the OCR of A DOLL'S LIFE but when that show closed after just 5 performances RCA cancelled the recording plans. Bruce Yeko did it on his own Original cast label and later licensed it to Bay Cities for a CD release.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

Cause the record companies in question sense that WEDDING SINGER and DROWSY will be hits and will therefore sell records. That is USUALLY the reason some shows get recorded and some don't (though that is changing now that producers are self-financing cast albums more and more).
