My family is planning on taking a trip to Seattle and we would really like to see CMIYC. While it hasn't opened yet, based on the movie do you think it would be appropriate for a 10 year old. I know there is a graphic scene in the film but it could be toned down for the show.

Your Thoughts?

I am also going to be attending "Catch Me If You Can" in Seattle with family members, including my twelve year-old nephew. If it has the same tone as "Hairspray" I think you should be OK.

Just because the same creative team is working on CMIYC why would you think it would be similar to Hairspray? It is a totally different subject matter.

If you want to know whether you can take a tween or teen to the show, call the theater.

I wouldn't recommend Hairspray for a 10 year old. Maybe I'm a snob but I hate going to show that isn't kid specific and sitting next to kiddies.

On the link it states the parental guidelines for this show, listing it as a PG13.
Based on what I see here, I'd take my ten-year-old sister, but it's really your call. I tend to take my sister to stuff that's a bit mature for her age only because she can appreciate it, I guess. Also keep in mind that this show is probably not going to be geared towards kids in general, so I'd be more worried about taking your kid to something they'd be bored at.

That does not sound appropriate for kids... the f-word and like 5 sex scenes...

My sister is very mature for her age and she has appreciated musicals such as Gypsy and Phantom of the Opera. I am going to call the theatre to make sure.

Once you've heard the f-word once, it stays the same. So the amount of times is sort of irrelevant, IMO (unless it's like Sopranos level)

And "in bed with" and "sex scene" are two totally different things.

If your sister liked Gypsy, I'd say she wouldn't be bored in this, as even though it's not aimed at kids, it will still be lighter and more fun than Gypsy. It kind of depends on whether you'd let your sister see the movie, or other PG13 movies for that matter...in recent years, most film ---> stage adaptations have had about the same appropriateness level as the films they're based on do.

The 5th Avenue website is pretty good about putting on a "rating" for the show if you go onto their webpage, go onto their main list of shows for the season, and then click "more info" for the show. It's right after the show description.

The 5th Avenue is listing the Catch Me If You Can "PG-13":

Parental Guidelines

As a parent, you are the only person qualified to determine what is appropriate for your child. The following information is provided to help you make the decision that is right for you and your family:
Catch Me if You Can
PG-13

This show contains both adult language and sexual situations and may not be appropriate for all family members.

Alcohol: Characters are seen in bars and other locations drinking, sometimes to excess.

Adult Language: Characters make multiple use of strong language, including vulgar words ("bull****"), swearing ("Jesus Christ!") and the "f" word (used some half a dozen times).

Sexual Situations: Frank, the 17-year-old runaway, is an innocent at the beginning of play, goes through his sexual initiation during this adventure; he is seen in bed with stewardesses, nurses, Hollywood starlets, and a prostitute before he finds Brenda and falls in love.

Violence: FBI agents are seen chasing the main character; gunshots are fired, but no one is hit.
