I don't know if someone has mentioned this before... but I just got Cats on DVD for Christmas and I have talked non-stop about that Rum Tum Tugger... My mother told me that our local legend Terrence Mann made a music video for VH1 ... or MTV... one of those with the cast of Cats back in the eighties (before my time). I just can't picture him in that role... (I think it's all the pelvic shots)... and the fact that he was my all-serious director guy... So we spent all morning trying to find a clip of it and have been terribly unsuccessful... I mean, I couldn't find any pictures of him in costume! Does anyone know of a site where I can find this clip? or if this clip even exists?
O/T... I just realized I spelled my username wrong... grr... and I liked that name, too... now it's going to drive me crazy...
If someone could find this clip for me, that'd be great!
Thanks!
Emily

I don't know about a music video, but if you pick up the original Broadway cast cd, you can certainly hear him in the role.

Posted: 12/27/05 at 2:21pmI remember the video and I think it aired on VH1. My mom and I used to love the video (and the song). He was great in the role.

It actually aired on MTV.
(Did VH-1 even exist in 1983-1984? If it did, then probably both stations... but definitely MTV.)
It was very cool. Started with real cats running around, then they "magically" turned into the actor/dancers.
The song was given a new "pop '80s" (more rock & dance sounding) arrangement, which I liked better than the original (as I recall). The dancers were hot. Terrence was great!
At the end it went back to the real cats and Terrence out of makeup. I had an old friend who was in it (since she was doing the Broadway show). I never asked her about it, and now I don't see her anymore. But she looked great! As did they all.

Posted: 12/27/05 at 2:41pmI remember that clip pretty well. I'd seen it maybe a half dozen times, and then I waited for hours to tape it but unfortunately never saw it again. I saw it on VH1, as well as the music videos from Leader of the Pack (Annie Golden and Patrick Cassidy) and Drood (original cast with Michael Rupert)). I did manage to tape Drood and Pack, but I lost Leader of the Pack over the years. I sure wish they'd have music videos from every show, but I guess they're just too expensive to produce. I also loved the old I Love New York commercials with the casts from shows such as A Chorus Line, Annie and Dracula. Seeing them on the recent PBS Broadway series was like seeing an old pal again!

Posted: 12/27/05 at 6:43pmOh goodness... 80's flashback... that video played on both MTV and VH1... it got heavier play on VH1. I remember it well because in my teen years I used to watch those channels in the morning before heading out to a day in high school hell. Rum Tum Tugger would play somewhere between a Cars video and REO's "One Lonely Night".

This was SO great to see these again! Thanks for posting the links.
In the "Cats" video I recognized Marlene Danielle and Jane Bodle as two of the "girls." Can't place the rest.
In the "Drood" video, it was great to see those "younger" images of Patti Cohenour (gorgeous!), Howard McGillan (also gorgeous!), Cleo Lane, Betty Buckley, George Rose, Jana Schneider (wow!) and John Herrera. Hell, they were ALL gorgeous back then. Great voices and a great song. It reminded me why I liked this show so much the first time.
As Bob Hope would often say... thanks for the memories!

...Only as much as the EIGHTIES were silly.
Wait 20 years, pal. People will be laughing at "now," just as much.

That was adorable!!!
ThrourouglyModernMLE, I just finnished reading the book "Making It on Broadway" and Terrance Mann has a whole section about how he got the role of Rum Tum Tugger. The NYC casting directors didn't see him as the type either so he basically went to London and auditioned for Gillian Lynne personally and got the role.

Percy: Sink me! If it isn't Javvurt!
Javert: Zsah-vair, it's pronounced Zsah-vair.
Pecry: But it's spelled J-A-V-E-R-T Javvurt.
Javert: Repeat after me Zsah...Zsah....
Percy: Oh! Zsa-Zsa! Like the Gabor sister! Well I personally have always prefered Eva.
Javert: (Looks for gun)

Maybe we should vote on it!!!
(Actually, the "conductor" was Rupert Holmes, who wrote the show. He also wrote the hideous hit song "Escape (The Pina Colada Song)."
Bleeecccchhhhh!
(LOVE Drood, though.)

Posted: 1/2/06 at 4:32pmBeing a huge fan of Terrence Mann for some time I actually have that video on tape somewhere - lol! I don't think it got a ton of airplay but it was on MTV and Video Jukebox when I was a kid. I LOVE that video!

Posted: 1/4/06 at 9:14pmYeah, that was an awesome (although a little outdated hehe) video! Hey, while I'm here with a bunch of Terry fans, have ya'll heard of his musical Romeo and Juliet? I was wondering if there was a full soundtrack floating around somewhere... I have part of the sample CD (only Juliet's Prayer and Shall I Compare Thee on it), I kind of wish I had the whole soundtrack.
