They certainly didn't cut the inappropriate content for the school edition of Les Miserables, so I doubt Rent would be TOOO wildly different. But there are a few things I can imagine they would have to get rid of...
"Rent"
Only song fully cut-Contact
No f**k, s***t
"To leather, to LATEX, to curry vindaloo."
There is still same-sex kissing.
"This is weird. It's weird. Very weird. Really weird"
"She cheated. She cheated. Maureen cheated. Maureen cheated"
"Dudes, I'm on my way. Benny, crap. I need the rent. Oh, great"
"HO-MO-SEX-U-ALS. Cross-dressers too"
"Inability to make a connection on the high holy days."
Maureen doesn't wear a skintight "cat" burglar suit (that's how it's described in the Broadway script), but that could just be this production
"Who the hell do you think you are? I don't need no goddamn help from some bleedy-heart cameraman. My life's not for you to make a name for yourself on. Easy sugar easy. He was just trying to .. Just trying to use me to kill his guilt! It's not that kind of movie honey. This life is FULL of SELF-RIGHTEOUS ARTISTS", plus she was white
Other things that might not have been "School Edition", but part of this school's production that I didn't like.
White Joanne
White Joanne's Parents
White Mimi
White Mimi's Mom
White Alexi (She's supposed to be Japanese or at least, Asian)
White Angel (He's supposed to be Hispanic but Asian works, too)
Female Gordon (They called her Taylor. She looked like a typical butch lesbian. She had a nice voice, but they still should've had a male)
Instead of recording "Leap of Faith" there were 3 girls singing/performing it behind Joanne
There was a preacher/priest/minister at Angel's funeral and she was wearing a rainbow flag. Metropolitan Community Church? LOL (That's New York's main gay church, for those of you who don't know)
All Christmas Bells people were girls who couldn't sing and were constantly drowned out by the orchestra
Everyone was white except Seasons of Love Soloist, Benny, and Collins
Mark looked Puerto Rican, but in the programme, it said his surname was Kaufmann, so obviously Jewish
Were you in the production? I guess they opted for color-blind casting. Or maybe they didn't have the ethnic background in the group/school?
Yes, MTF3, we do get along, in regard to your PM.
Yeah, my school's theatre department is pretty much all-white, with maybe one or two Asian-ish people. We were thinking of putting on "Hairspray," but that obviously wouldn't work. But at my middle school, we did a show where there were twins of different races, and a mother whose race was different from either of theirs.
Let's not let this turn into the 'black Billy Elliot' thread...
No!!!!!! I wasn't in it! Considering I'm 23 years old and this high school was in Maryland and I'm only living here for the next 5 days! 3 of my cousins go to that school though (2 maternally, 1 paternally. The one on my father's side did lights and 1 on my mother's side saw it, and I met her there).
If you did Hairspray, you'd have to resort to what that show choir did during "Run and Tell That". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=34Cw9__Bxm0. *Sigh* Why disgrace the song, so?
Have you checked out the Finnish production? It was horrible! No black people and Motormouth had to do blackface!
