So, I just moved to Philly and of course, being that it's fairly close to the city, I'm planning to go to New York every now and then. Do any of you have an recommendations as to the cheapest way to get there? Amtrak seems pretty steep, so I was wondering if there was a better way. Thank you so much.

I lived in Philly last year and went to NYC every weekend.
The cheapest way is Greyhound. Look it up on Greyhound.com. It's fairly inexpensive. And if you have Student Advantage you get even more discounts.

$20 roundtrip

Walk.
$20 round trip. That's $8.00 less than it costs me to drive myself thru the Lincoln Tunnel and park in the Port Authority.
I live in Philadelphia too, and head up to NYC at least once a month.
Cheapest way is New Jersey Transit through Trenton. On weekends and off-peak it's $19.50 for the roundtrip. NJT runs on the Amtrak tracks and offers local and express trains. Trip can take anywhere from 1.5 hrs to 2.0 hrs. Dumps you at Penn Station
Septa's R-7 connects through to Trenton and is times with New Jersey Transit. Verrry easy!
How about the cheapest way to get to NYC from Milwaukee?

From Milwaukee, the cheapest way is Greyhound. Take it to Chicago, switch there to a bus to NYC.
septa's the best way to go...born and raised in philly.
Thanks a lot guys, I'll look into it!
Septa does not go to New York.
I've taken the Chinatown bus that Kavana mentioned several times. It's a bit sketchy, but it works and is very cheap. There are a few other companies that run buses as well- I have taken both Apex Bus and Today's Bus as well as New Century Travel. They all run different schedules, but otherwise are pretty much the same.
I lived in Phily my whole life, just moved to Texas 3 months ago...
Best way, NJ Transit to NYC. Fast, safe, cheap!
I miss Philly and NYC!

Septa to Trenton, then NJ Transit the rest of the way.
You can compare prices to Greyhound on their respective web sites, but I think trains beat busses anyday for comfort.
I agree, Amtrack is way too steep, and that's with all our taxpayer subsidies, yet they're still losing money!
well i mean i call all public transportation septa. its a habit. but in actuality, yes, nj transit will be the thing to get u to nyc.

No Chinatown is def cheapest. NJ transit connects in Trenton, which is in ne Jersey. NOw that might be 19.50 but it takes 7.50 to get to trenton. Mind you, once you take the chinatown bus, you'll have to take the F uptown to midtown manhatten, but it's still cheaper. And the china town will get you there in 2 hrs or less. Including the septa ride, NJ Transit is about 2 and a half some times 3 hrs.
Ive taken all three aforementioned plans...They are all pretty much the same in price. The Septa way (r7 to Trenton) is more by a few bucks. Drawback is you do have to make an exchange. the Chinatown $20 can sometimes be unpredictable. For $24, Greyhound I feel is the most reliable. The Chinatown bus has been known to wait to depart until it fills up more, and when I go to NY for an audition, I definitely want to know when I am departing! However if you are going all the time you can do Amtrak for like $350/month with unllimited trips.
I live like 35min from the city in Jersey and I pay $16 for bus everytime I go if you can get from Philly for $20, thats amazing and not fair on my part!
