A Lot of people have argued that Chicago's ticket sales have gone up since the movie was released, and have stated that the same thing will happen to PoTO. Here's the difference. Chicago was a good movie..no..correction...GREAT movie. A movie that was viewed by a mainstream audience who would never see a film with the word "Opera" in it. I'll be honest POTO is so bad, I really think it will have an effect on sales.
I don't think the movie is bad by any means - but it's certainly not as solid as CHICAGO. The thing with PHANTOM is that most people who would go see the show have already seen it. They already know the music and everything and will see the movie because they enjoy the show. That's why PHANTOM's current ads are targeting return audiences with "Remember your first time." CHICAGO's ticket sales on Broadway were significantly (but not dangerously) lower before the movie came out - now they're packed every night. So no, I don't think it will influence Broadway tickets sales by a significant amount. Also, non-theatre people went to see CHICAGO to see what all the buzz was about, plus the great cast. After all the hype about the movie, people who had never heard of CHICAGO before had an interest in seeing it on Broadway. That's my opinion anyway.
