Chicago as we all know did very well at the Oscars. Did the movie get "rave" reviews acrss the board? just thinking about RENT and what the reviews might mean in terms of the type of success Chicago had.

No film gets rave reviews "across the board" but you can check Metacritic.com and Rottentomatoes, to see that yes, the reviews over all for CHICAGO were quite ecstatic.

Lots of raves. Some pans.
I read reviews *after* I saw the film. Good idea, I think, since I had almost no familiarity with the music and it ended up becoming one of my favorite movies of all time.
Few movies get across the board raves, especially movie musicals.

I don't think you can compare them.
First off, Chicago is a great musical, and the movie did something a lot different than the show.
Rent is virtually the stage show on screen with film differences, of course.
Furthermore, I feel like the reviews for the Rent film will be what the critics may have initially intended to write...but because of Larson' death Rent was able to push its way into the critics' hearts.
While Chicago, the show, has its problems, Rent has more flaws. If these flaws aren't fixed, the critics will rip them apart.
