So, my director is going to be doing "Children of Eden" and thinks it's possible to do it with NINE people. I personally don't think it's a good idea, but just wondering what everyone else's thoughts on it were.
I think it's a WONDERFUL idea. This show gets to be cluttered I think. The only downside might be that animal part but how many animals do you really need? It's only more **** to sew together or rent. There are such good characters in this show that the few stand alone so well.

I can't imagine that show without a chorus, seems a bit odd.
I think with nine it would be hard.. Maybe 15 to 20, but nine.. will be a challenge.. I did this show summer 2003 and with 35 people in the cast I was still on constently.. so a larger cast works

Nine gives you exactly enough for the characters in the second act. I just don't see how it would work. I agree that the show can tend to be cluttered if the chorus is too large, but no chorus at all...both visually and vocally I don't know how they'd pull it off.

Lots of shows can be done without choruses, actually. There was a production of MY FAIR LADY in Chicago a couple of seasons ago that had no chorus, only a cast of seven. It was amazing. EDEN could work the same way, but it requires a lot of imagination from your director.
The way CoE is written it would be very difficult to do with no enemble.. In the second act you would have to cut a lot of the "stoytellers" because they sing at the same time the 9 named characters do.. it's an important part of the show to have storytellers.. even if it's just 4 one for each part.. however I think the sopranos at the least seperate into part.. maybe even the altos.. I would have to check my libretto.. I would say 15 would be the bare minimum, but hey more power to em if you can pull this off.. It's a beautiful show..

Nine is a little bit too small for Children of Eden.
