re: Chita Rivera...first preview 9/10

How long do you think it would take a show like this to make back its investment? It seems weird to have an open-ended run for shows like this. I can't imagine Chita will be performing this for 10 years on Broadway, even if it sells out everynight. And she's going to need vacation time, etc. Just wondering. Seems like a lot is riding on Chita.

It's probably captitalized and set up to break even within a month or two. I wouldn't expect her to run more than six months anyway. Rivera is perhaps slightly more famous than Elaine Stritch, but nevertheless isn't the sort of big mainstream name that can sell to the tourists for months and months on her name alone. Stritch's AT LIBERTY made a profit running just three months on Broadway (after a two month run at the Public).

Billy Crystal did 7 months, after several extensions (but then again he's not in his 70s and didn't sing or dance).

The longest running of this kind of solo musical biography show that I can think of was perhaps the best of them all -- "Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music" which ran over a year back in 1981 - 1982 (333 performances). But then Lena had been a household name for decades. She subsequently toured the show for the next couple of years. Not sure where on earth she found the stamina at 65 to do such an incredibly demanding show for so long -- she was phenomenal.
