Has there been any news about a cast recording of the current production?
Nothing official yet, but the chances are looking slim.

How come?

No one knows exactly why. But I'm hoping, wishing, and praying for one!
Because there's a London recording, and I guess it's not that common to re-record when that's the case.
And honestly (in personal speculation) Chitty's a show meant to withstand cast changes, that just so happens to have a beautifully cast original company. But I don't think that the majority of people would care so much whether it's Raúl Esparza or Michael Ball singing Hushabye Mountain or You Two. And there are a lot of full company numbers, which will sound pretty much the same, even if they recorded again. It's probably just not worth it, unfortunately.

Don't you think this cast needs to be perserved onto CD?
Oh my gosh, of course. I think they're all wonderful, and their vocal talented is incomparable, especially since you're not going to find anyone else who's got a voice like Raúl's.

I agree with you Emcee. From what I've seen, the cast is outstanding. It should be preserved on CD.

Did you mean that they generally don't rerecord when there's a London cast of the show?

Yep. I think that's what Emcee meant.
Right. Recently, that's been the case anyway... the majority of the time. Mamma Mia! and Bombay Dreams come to mind, though there are definitely more that haven't been recorded in the States.

Is there a reason why?

I don't know. It's not common, just like Emcee said.
I believe Les Miserables had a London...and then came out with Broadway.
I'd venture to guess that since people who don't follow the theatre scene all that closely aren't going to be all bent out of shape if they're listening to a different cast, it just doesn't make sense, you know? I mean, once the original cast is gone, there isn't a new recording made for subsequent casts, even though everyone who sees the show after the OBC's departure and buys the CD will be listening to people other than those they saw.

Are you talking specifically about shows that have moved from London straight to Broadway? Cuz that wouldn't make sense if there was a London recording of a show and then, say, 10 years later the show was done on Broadway.
Well, yeah, in mentioning things like Mamma Mia! and Bombay Dreams - London transfers. Chitty's story is similar... it's still running in the West End, and now it's here. It's almost the same production.
I don't know what typically happens for shows that see a gap in the times of production.

Chitty came to Broadway only a few years after Chitty in London opened...
