Chitty Chitty Bang Bang - 7/27 Matinee

I am not great at writing reviews but will give it a shot.

I saw the show on Wednesday, sitting in the 6th row of the center orchestra. I was extremely disappointed in so many aspects of the show. I found the sets terrific. Jan Maxwell and Marc Kudish were an absolute delight. I also got goosebumps when chitty took flight. I have to admit it was thrilling.

That said, there was just so much wrong with the show. I found Erin Dilly to be very very annoying. She just didn't seem to convey the warmth that I remember from the character in the movie. She also was always touching and groping and hugging the kids, in particular Jeremy. I found it uncomfortable. I don't understand her Tony nomination at all.

Raul was in great voice and it was a thrill to see him up close, but I didn't think the character was strange enough in the beginning. The love for the kids came through nicely, but his growing relationship with Truly just seemed rushed.

The two Vulgarian spys were just annoying and not funny in the least.

I could go on and on, but need to get to work. Glad I saw it, wish it were better.

And he's cute, isn't he? re: Chitty Chitty Bang Bang - 7/27 Matinee

It's interesting that you say the character wasn't strange enough... it seems almost like he's tried to tone down the eccentricity a bit, because he's gone from just looking like a crazy guy who befriends the kids to looking more like a loving father. His growing relationship with Truly... well, you're lucky if you see it grow at all. I feel like when he's opposite Erin, Truly might as well be Caractacus' pet rock. I love him, but it's true.

Erin's Tony nod was by default - the last slot would have to either have been her, Jenn G. from ASU, Kate Reinders from Good Vibes (both jukebox shows) or someone like Melissa Errico from Dracula (a flop).

He is great looking - love the sideburns. I really wanted him to end up with the Baron! I'd rather that the Baron gave Raul the long wet kiss rather than Chip.

While I don't love the shaved head look, my pulse quickened everytime Marc was on the stage. He seemed to be having the best time on that stage and he is SOOOOO good looking. Jealous that Chip got such a lingering kiss.

There was nothing bad about her voice - she sounded fine. I just didn't like her characterization of the character.

Uh oh! I hope none of the other cast members get sick. Feel better, Erin!

It's kind of an annoying character... cute, but kind of grating. heh.

I didn't mind the kids - certainly better than the brats in the movie. I did hate the audience however. For kids shows, I expect there to be more audience noise. The problem with these types of shows is that it brings in people who normally don't go to the theatre and have no idea how to act. The family behind me very noisely ate peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Just annoying.

After I went to Bryant Park yesterday, I was humming Truly Scrumptious for the rest of the day. I kind of wanted to smash my head into a wall.

That score is THE biggest earworm ever.

i think the best worst song is "the bombie samba"!
'BIM BIM, BOM. BOM, ITS CALLED THE BOMBIE SAMBA!
OH, NO, ITS NOT, A TANGO, OR A RUMBA!"

muihahahahahah

I hate rude audience members.

The song sucks, but Jan and Marc are so brillant in it, you just have to love it.

Though we may seem presumptious... scrumptious as a cherry peach parfait... When you're with us, it's so delicious...

Or something.

At Kevin Cahoon's gig a couple weeks ago, his final encore was a punked out version of Truly Scrumptious/Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

I wanted him to revamp the entire show right then and there. The first time I ever WANTED either of those songs in my head!

I heard about that. Was it brilliant? I was really bummed that I couldn't make it; I'm kind of interested to check out his stuff. re: Chitty Chitty Bang Bang - 7/27 Matinee

There are so many strong supporting players, Kevin Cahoon, Jan Maxwell, and Marc Kudish give the strongest performances of the show.

Raul did a nice job when I saw the show in previews, but I agree that there was little to no chemistry between him and Erin Dilly.

I love this show! Oh, btw, does this mean that Marc Kudish is leaving, or just taking a break from the show after being cast in that new show. [I forgot the show name]
