Ok. So when I saw Grey Gardens two weeks ago, one of my thoughts were... hmm... I'd like to see Victoria Clark play this role.
then I thought... how would Christine play Margaret in Piazza?
thoughts?

Christine Ebersole probably could play that role. It's an operatic role, and she's a trained opera singer with a gorgeous voice. As for Victoria Clark as Big/Little Edie Beale, I'm not as sure. I like Ms. Clark as a singer, but I'm not entirely convinced she's got the comedic elements down for Little Edie or the diversity of ranges necessary to cover both roles.
In all fairness, I'm not sure they're interchangeable actresses. It seems unfair to reduce them to this, doesn't it? They're both very talented (I have my biases, obviously.) ladies. Their talents and abilities are very different, as are these roles.
I'm not sure...

Victoria Clark is a glorious comedienne. Her performances in TITANIC and HOW TO SUCCEED... were hilarious examples of spot-on comic timing and invention.
They would both work in either show as they are both wonderful talents, but I agree that they shouldn't be thought of as interchangeable.
Hasn't there already been a thread or two about this?

I just listened to Titanic again today and Clark's performance in her number about the first class passengers is hysterical and particularly Little Edie-ish. (She doesn't do the accent really, but she's so gabby and gawky in the song, like Little Edie.) Of course, she was very funny in Piazza too. I think she could pull it off. And God, does she have dramatic range! She's my favorite actress working in today's musical theatre, so I think she could pull off anything.
And as for Ebersole as Margaret, that seems a good match too.

I just named these two roles, because I would like to see the way each woman would play either. Christine would bring a completely different take on Margaret, as would Victoria to the Edies. Their personal differences are what I think would bring a completely different beauty to either character, and there are characters that both have played, that I coudln't see the other playing.
