I just found out that my theater group is doing Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella this summer. I'd like to familiarize myself with the music before the show, which CD is best to buy? Thanks!

I like both of them (Andrews and Warren) because they both have elements that are great for each of those productions. I have both, I think you won't go wrong going with either/or in my opinion.

re: Cinderella
I'd go with this recording, but I'd encourage you to see both the original TV version and the Leslie Ann Warren remake on video. If you end up really liking it, you should also watch the recent Brandy remake, although it less true to the original version.

I was thinking about going with the Andrews version simply because its Julie Andrews. Thanks everyone!

The Julie Andrews CD is a necessity. The Lesley Ann Warren one includes the addition of "Loneliness of Evening," a song which had been cut from South Pacific. Perhaps that song is in the version you are doing and you may want to consider that when deciding what to purchase.

Incidentally, there is also available the London cast recording. They were the first ones to put it on stage. Interpolations for that score were "A Very Special Day," "Marriage Type Love," and "No Other Love," which are all from Me And Juliet.

Tommy Steele played a new character named Buttons and even wrote a new song for the show called "You and Me." Talk about nerve! This CD is quite a curio.

I think that if you want to audition for the part of Cinderella, go with the Julie Andrews version to buy.

If not, then I would go with the other version... but I would urge you to at leats listen to both.

Well, I'm a guy, so I won't be going for Cinderella lol. I will look into both, though.

oh... oops

then I would go for the other version
I didn't really like any of the guys in the Julie Andrews version. I actually just watched it today... strange coincidence

I really don't like this show, but Julie Andrews recording is by far superior to the rest. Do NOT, i repeat, do NOT go off the Brandy movie. It's shocking.

For this show to be successfully done, the production has to not take itself seriously in the least. It's a clunky musical, with only a couple of worthwhile songs, so almost always play the comic side of the script. There are quite a few well written laugh lines though.
