Quick question...what do people wear to chorus calls in New York (the Chorus Calls for Singers who can move, not Dancers who can Sing)? How dressy are they? Do you dress for the part and/or show?
For any audition you should dress for success. I have seen many people come into auditons wearing jeans and t-shirts, which is a big NO! NO! Wear something that best suits your build/physique, but not too busy or obnoxious color wise.
Men: Solid, button down shirt (tie optional) & khakis
Girls: Nicely cut, figure flattering dress or skirt and top with shoes that do not stunt your height too much.
If it says be prepared to dance or "move" I would bring appropriate attire (tight fitting attire and proper dance shoes). You want to wear something that they will remember you by, but do not over do it! Wearing black is less desirable than other colors.
I would say "dressing for the part" is not usually the best route, but there are clever ways of "incorporating" the show into your outfit, but this is all dependent on the show.

I believe in dressing casual. Comfortable. It's more a no-no to come looking like you came from the gym, but I see nothing wrong with T-shirt and jeans - especially if the part calls for it. I will not conform to a button down shirt just to give myself a squeaky-clean image, simply because, that is not who I am. I'm there to represent myself.
So I take it wearing a t'shirt that either said "I'm the Evil Twin" or "Please Don't Interrupt Me While I'm Ignoring You" wouldn't be a good option to wear.

Nowadays the T-shirt and jeans faux pas is getting to be a bit outdated. We're sorta on the cusp of the change over. Some people hate it some people don't care. More and more people are going "smart casual". For guys I sometimes go with a REALLY nice pair of jeans, a white collared button down shirt (first button open), with a nice blue jacket (perhaps with the cuffs of the white shirt folded over). For females I have no clue.
For females, I obviously wouldn't go sloppy or anything but either some really nice jeans maybe paired with a fitted jacket and heels so you still look like yourself and you are comfortable but like you've made a special effort to pump up the everyday look for the occasion. I'm not sure I'd say go full out with a dress and heels though but thats just me.
I agree that you are representing yourself at an audition, and that more and more people are incorporating jeans into their attire. Just do it right! I would say put some effort into what you are auditioning in, because what you wear is also your "visual resume". Now each theatre may be different, but I am referring to New York City auditions.

Thanks for all the ideas. I'm in Chicago now, and here it's pretty much either dressy jeans and a nice shirt or sweater (maybe with a fitted jacket, and definitely with heels to dress it up some), or it's a slightly more casual skirt. I'm considering doing the New York move within a year or so, so just trying to start piling up my info. on the differences! Oh, and when I said dressing for the part or role, I didn't mean full costume, but more should you hint at a character (like if you're auditioning for something period, wear a long skirt instead of pants, or if you're auditioning for a specific role--i.e. Audrey in Little Shop--wear something fitted)?
Of course, if you're auditioning for "Rent" they'll ask you to wear jeans and such...hehe
