NYMPH ERRANT opened 10/6/1933, in London at the Adelphi and starred Gertrude Lawrence. It was one of two shows Cole Porter wrote for the West End. (Does anyone besides Magruder know the other?)

The opening night madness was captured by the reporter for the Daily Sketch "The foyer was invaded by autography hunters who burt through the strong cordon of police and mingled wsith the audience. Late arrivals almost had their dresses torn from the backs...Without a doubt this was the biggest first night for a long time and the biggest social event of the Little Season." The reviews? Enthusiastic for Gertie and for Porter's score. "It is not Miss Lawrence's fault that the character cannot hope for sympahty, and the all the actress can do is to keep our interest alive by her own grace, accomplishment, intelligence and charm," so said The Evening Post. "Mr. Cole Porter's songs are certainly among the cleverest elements of the piecel; he is one of the few lyricists who really make one want to hear the words," according to the Manchester Guardian.

NYMPH ERRANT closed on 2/17/1934, 154 performances. Although plans were announced for a film version that never materialzed. It was never produced on Broadway. Its first NYC production was done by the Equity Library Theatre in March, 1982.

For anyone who knows the biopic STAR starring Julie Andrews, you'll recognize The Physician which Julie as Gertie on-stage in NYMPH ERRANT does sublimely.

Yours for a better Broadway!

NYMPH ERRANT was bought by the Fox Film Co. for its up-and-coming star Alice Faye. Unfortunately, the strict Production Code that came in full-force later that year made its story unfilmable.

Fox had also comissioned Porter to write another film for Faye, ADIOS ARGENTINA, to co-star Mexican singing star Tito Guizar. A nearly complete score was written when Fox's precarious finances caused the film to be permanently shelved.

One song from the film did become a hit nearly ten years later - "Don't Fence Me In".
"Christ, Bette Davis?!?!"

It's nice to hear about NYMPH ERRANT. I knew Doris Carson from the original production of ON YOUR TOES. She had appeared in NYMPH ERRANT in London and had some really funny stories. Unfortunately, I can't remember the stories now!!!!
