I'm not a 100% sure who the understudies are for the 3 leads. I might be late with this realization, but I noticed during the Miss Celie's pants scene each of the church ladies are dressed pretty identical to one of the three leads, does that mean that they are the understudies for them?

Very interesting indeed, I would have never picked up on this since only Danielle Brooks and Carrie Compere wear the exact same color, but Cynthia's and Bre Jackson's are very close being yellow/mustard and Rema Webb/Jennifer Hudson wear red in different styles, I would have just thought it was a coincidence, but definitely not. Cool stuff!
