Comedy or Tragedy?

I'm doing a survey for my theatre arts class at school. I have to ask a bunch of people an opinary question on their taste in theatre and turn the results in, so who better to ask than you guys?

Here's the question: In the case of a play or musical, do you prefer to see a comedy or tragedy?

Comedy. There's enough tragedy in the world and my past.

re: Comedy or Tragedy?

Comedy, I like to go to the theatre to escape the troubles of life for a while. Don't get me wrong, I love a powerful tragic play/musical, but I prefer the comedic ones.

re: Comedy or Tragedy?

Tragedy, I like to cry. I also like tragedy because it really makes me think about how things could have changed, to make the ending "happy."

Two, three, kick, turn turn turn kick turn! :)

This is a tough one. I'd have to say tragedy with comedy. I like to feel all the emotions during a show. I prefer, however, to have it end happy, so I'd have to have my final answer be comedy.

re: Comedy or Tragedy?

IMHO, I don't think your question is specific enough. I'd make it either a play OR a musical. In the case of musicals - I don't have a preference as long as the story is good. PARADE is a tragedy - and yet it's one of my favorite shows. THE PRODUCERS is a comedy - and yet it's one of my favorite shows.

For plays, I prefer to see professional tragedy productions and community/school comedic productions.
"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

re: Comedy or Tragedy?

I agree with CapnHook. If it's a musical, I enjoy either as long as it's good! As for a play, I also like a good cry, so I think I'll go with a tragedy...BUT then again, I'm such a cry baby, I cry during comedies too...sorry, I know that doesn't help much.

re: Comedy or Tragedy?

Tragedy, I'd have to say. But most of my favorite modern plays mix comic and tragic elements in various combinations and can't be described as classical tragedy or comedy.

re: Comedy or Tragedy?

Tragedy.

Comedies just never, ever reach the same artistic levels as tragedies - whether it be film, theatre, whatever. Comedy never satisfies me - partially because so much of what is called "comedy" does not amuse me. I would rather have my heart ripped out and/or be very MOVED by something than to just laugh. And so far, for the most part, the comedies I have encountered don't allow for that.

Munk - just from a movie standpoint, I think TOOTSIE, STEEL MAGNOLIAS and MOONSTRUCK (just to name three) refute your arguement.
