I think every show has to have comic relief - no matter what it is. Unless, of course, if it's Holocaust the Musical (which actually exists according to beyondtheatre.com)

Posted: 3/27/05 at 4:51pmEvery successful show has to have a sense a humor to break up the monotony. Even gloom and doom pop operas, such as POTO and Les Mis have comedy briefly in them. The Phantom's notes, the long bass note in "Poor Fool, He Makes Me Laugh", "Master of the House", etc. Jekyll and Hyde could have definitely used some humor somewhere. The spots where humor was was terribly misplaced. A joke in the middle of the transformation!? The apex of the first act? Thanks for taking us right out of the moment guys! You need some humor, but you have to be careful with it.

Rent could do away with anything semi-comedic and still convey great messages and entertain everyone..La Cage could do away with the man-servant as the 'comic relief' and still have an air to it of funny because of the cagelles..I dont think it's necessary, but unless it's a non fictional portrayal, it's almost always there anyway.
