Coming to NYC in December. Please advise me on shows

Hello everyone from a new member.
I am fulfilling my dream and finally coming to NYC from Athens, Greece in December for 8 days. I could use your help, guys, although more or less I know what I want to see but your advice will be precious. First of all I must say that I've been to London many times and seen many shows like Phantom, Mamma Mia, Chicago, Lion King etc. I already have tickets for The Boy from Oz (first row center !!!)and I am definetely going to Rent, Aida and Hairspray. I am thinking also about The Producers and Beauty and The Beast (I love Disney). Any more suggestions ? Do you agree with my selections ? In order to understand my tastes, I have to say that I am gay (surprise :))i like spectacles and my all time favorites are Miss Saigon, Crazy for You, Les Mis and Chicago. Any help will be appreciated, glad to join you.

I keep hearing many things about Avenue Q and I don't know a lot about it, I have to check it out. I wish I had more days to see everything, but if I see Avenue Q or something else, maybe i have to drop The Producers or Beauty. I wonder if it's worth it.

If you like to laugh, I strongly recommend WICKED (lots of great songs & spectacle), THE PRODUCERS, & AVENUE Q. Lots of gay-appeal too!!!!!

I'm sorry, I misread your screen name. I thought it was Greekmuscleman, in which case I was going to offer to give you a private tour of Manhattan and to show you all the ins and outs. I hate to leave my Greek friends behind.

Avenue Q!!!! DEFINTELY worth missing Rent or the Producers. Both shows are far overrated, in my opinion. Avenue Q is smart and incredibly entertaining.

I'd also invest in the shows that will be opening around then -- mainly Wicked.

*I* will be seeing Never Gonna Dance because its based on my favorite Fred/Ginger movie, but I have a feeling it won't be as strong a cast as previous musicals listed. It's a light hearted romantic comedy put to Jerome Kern's music, though... if that piques your interest. Doesn't sound like something you described.

The new Nine cast should be something to see. I will certainly be revisiting. I really enjoyed the production with the original cast. That should also be something you look into.

Don't automatically go to the overrated shows -- you could be missing out on some great new stuff! :)

I say see Rent, but not The Producers. Rent might be a little overrated, but is still awesome. Now, The Producers is extremely overrated!

definetely do NOT miss RENT!! I agree with the Producers being overrated but RENT has earned every ounce of it's hype. It seems to me Avenue Q is more overrated than RENT, but, if you're into puppet sex, more power to you! I think your list so far is excellent because AIDA and Hairpray are two of my other favrorite shows! I'd also catch Adam Pascal in Cabaret if you have time =) I'll hopefully be in NYC in December too, so maybe i'll see you at RENT!

Wow, so many responces so soon. Thank you all, you are great ! I wish i had more days to see everything!!! Seems like Avenue Q is a common favorite to all, so i will really think about it. Except from Boy from Oz, I will definetely see RENT, i have the CD from 1997 and i love it and i missed the show in London, so this one is for sure. I see no negative reactions to Aida, so this one is on then. I am worried about finding tickets to Hairspray though, while in Ticketmaster there are front row seats for Rent, Aida, Beauty, there are very few way in the back for Hairspray. Another thing I wanted to ask you guys. For popular shows do you think that it is wiser to get them online well in advance, or is it better to go to the Box Office ? I heard that many good seats become available one or two days before the show, especially for Hairspray. What do you think ? And also will my beloved Harvey Fierstein still be on it on December ?

See AIDA, Beauty And The Beast, Producers. If you like spectacles, you will love 42nd STREET.

I'm late posting here, but add another one to the AVENUE Q cheerleading squad.

And I think HAIRSPRAY will still have Harvey in it when December rolls around. As for a ticket, My guess is that you can get one last minute at the Box office for the day of performance. It's always easier to snag a single ticket.
