Margaret is stepping outside the timeframe into the future, thinking back on this like a memory piece of what happened, and what she did in marrying off her "challenged" daughter to an unsuspecting young man. It's like, a guilt thing.

That's actually one of the last lines from the novel: "She had played a tricky game in a foreign country." I loved how they worked it in there.

In all seriousness, though, Margaret knows she's done the right thing. She's just pretty much summing up the whole experience before we get into details.
