I'm sure it's been asked before but I am going through a Jason Mraz obsession period, right now, and believe he could write a brilliant contempoary score for Musical Theatre.

What contemp. singers and songwriters, who haven't already, could really write a good score for musical theatre??

Why?

well, you know that Jason Mraz was actually going to do musical theatre in college before he dropped out for his music career? and he participated in a BUNCH of local productions when he was around the high school age in my area :) so i think yeah, he could do it

I was just thinking about Ben Folds and theatre...

I remember a year or two ago there, wasn't there a concert of Broadway performers singing his music? And, at the same time, there were some articles/rumors/talk that he was actually writing a musical?

I would love a Ben Folds musical!!

I just wanted to add... I find his music to be so theatrical and dramatic and almost all tell such a great and detailed story. His writing is very similar to JRB on those two levels and I think he would be a great MT composer.

I second Ben Folds
as well as The Dresden Dolls and Regina Spektor

You're reminding me of people you hear at the movies asking questions every ten seconds, "Who is that? Why is that guy walking down the street? Who's that lady coming up to him? Uh-oh, why did that car go by? Why is it so dark in this theater?" - FindingNamo on strummergirl

"If artists were machines, then I'm just a different kind of machine...I'd probably be a toaster. Actually, I'd be a toaster oven because they're more versatile. And I like making grilled cheese" -Regina Spektor

"That's, like, twelve shows! ...Or seven." -Crazy SA Fangirl

"They say that just being relaxed is the most important thing [in acting]. I take that to another level, I think kinda like yawning and...like being partially asleep onstage is also good, but whatever." - Sherie Rene Scott

Yes to Regina and The Dresden Dolls.

But I would kill to see Nellie McKay write a musical.

I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.

I was thinking of Nellie McKay, but I'd rather see her act. She was so good in Threepenny. Maybe she could go Lin Manuel Miranda and do both. She would write a very smart, cheeky show.
As much as I'd love to see The ReSpektor write a show, for some reason I can't see it actually happening. Atleast not a full fledged, Broadway material musical. Maybe a short, small chamber piece, or a concept recording, or some sort of childrens show.

could deff see a Concept Recording.

not a full musical.

Regina was trained, to an extent, in musical theatre... wasn't she??

I just remembered The Dresden Dolls have already written a musical, The Onion Cellar.
It was a pseudo-musical-cabaret-jukebox-rock show hybrid borrowing songs the duo already wrote.
