Could Judy Kaye take the Tony?
#0Could Judy Kaye take the Tony?
Posted: 4/26/06 at 1:37amYes, Souvenir closed several months ago, but her performance was universally praised and the Best Actress category really isn't that full this year. The nominees would seem to be Kaye, Cynthia Nixon, Cherry Jones, Zoe Wanamaker and probably either Julia Roberts or Kate Burton. Out of those women, I could see it possibly going to Nixon, but Kaye would certainly get my vote.

Kaye would be the last one to get my vote, and that's including Julia Roberts.
I found her performance to be too over the top, too self-referential, and just plain obnoxious. If it were up to me, I wouldn't even nominate her. I wouldn't count on her winning - SOUVENIR is long gone and, it seems, forgotten about. And that's for the best.

Thought she was nearly brilliant - I absolutely loved her performance, although I haven't seen Cherry Jones yet. Still, it's unlikely that Cherry will win again, no matter how brilliant she is - and she obviously will be.
While Julia Roberts is mediocre, there's something about her that just makes me want her to win.

She played it as if the character KNEW she was a bad singer - KNOWING that she was making the audience laugh. We were laughing WITH her, as opposed to AT her.
I thought that show was a disaster - I hated every second of the first act. Didn't stick around for the second.

Having seen nearly every play to open on Broadway this season, my personal favorite actress has been Judy Kaye. I thought "Souvenir" was one of the funniest and best plays I have seen on Broadway in a while, and my god, how anyone could not respect Judy Kaye's performance, I have no idea. I caught "Souvenir" about three performances from its closing date, and was hitting myself on the head for not seeing it sooner. This, in my humble opinion, is who should/will take the Best Actress Tony:
Should
1. Judy Kaye
2. Lisa Kron
3. Cynthia Nixon
4. Zoe Wanamaker
5. Jill Clayburgh
Will
1. Cynthia Nixon
2. Lisa Kron
3. Judy Kaye
4. Julia Roberts
5. Zoe Wanamaker

She is still being talked about since her performance in THE CONSTANT WIFE last summer. I would love to see Ms. Nixon win, yet I'm still eager to see Cherry's performance. Is there a possibility Cherry would be considered featured?
