Would love to know any post-"I Will Never Leave You" differences between the original production and the current revival... Did the original also end with them on the set of Freaks, giving that look to the audience?
The original production used a Brechtian device during the opening, with the cast dressed in everyday clothing, sitting on bleachers, and facing the audience. Slowly over the number the side show was created and the people assumed their roles as freaks, etc. the twins started apart and came together in front of us.
The end of the show reversed the process. The wedding happens and then everything devolved back to the opening image of everyone sitting on the bleachers facing the audience, and the twins apart again.
***SPOILER***
Do you know if in the original production staging the twins separated while singing "I Will Never Leave You" as they do in the current revival? I know they didn't in the Tony Awards performance but those are usually different than in the show.
They stayed together all through "I Will Never Leave You". It was only just before the very, very end of the "Come Look At The Freaks" Reprise that they separated and walked back to their original spots on the bleachers where they began the show.
