2009 Season Announcement
Covina, CA—The Covina Center for the Performing Arts is proud to announce the 2009 Season, opening January 23, 2009 with the L.A. Regional Premiere of the Tony Award winning musical The Light in the Piazza.
2009 promises to be a bold and breathtaking year in Covina, as Tony Award winners, Emmy Award winners, a show Direct from Broadway, a Los Angeles Regional Premiere AND a big Broadway Blockbuster grace the stage of this $12 million “boutique regional theatre”.
In addition, the 2009 season at The Covina Center for the Performing Arts will be TWO seasons! The Mainstage Season opens with The Light in the Piazza, Neil Simon’s Barefoot in the Park, a new musical (part of the Festival of New American Musicals), HMS Pinafore-In Concert, Glimmer, Glimmer and Shine and a Broadway Blockbuster so big we can’t even tell you the name until February 25th 2009, season ticket patrons will have a lot to choose from.
There will also be a Special Event Season featuring Tony award winner Jason Robert Brown, 4-time Emmy award winner Fritz Coleman, In the Mood – a tribute to the music of the 1930s and 40s, Not Fade Away – a tribute to the rock and roll of the 1950s and 60s and Latinologues, comedy monologues about the Latino experience in America.

MAINSTAGE SEASON
The Light in the Piazza: Los Angeles Regional Premiere – Winner of 6 Tony Awards in 2005, this revolutionary musical swept Broadway with its story of an American tourist in Tuscany who falls in love with a handsome Florentine. January 23-February 15, 2009
Neil Simon’s Barefoot in the Park: - At his bubbling, ribtickling best, Neil Simon’s Barefoot in the Park is the story of a newlywed couple, their 6 floor walkup apartment with a leaky skylight and an eccentric neighbor, in-laws, jobs, misunderstandings and the beginnings of love.
March 6-April 5, 2009
Season Option #1: Festival of New American Musicals - a concert presentation of a new musical, part of the Festival of New American Musicals. Show title to be announced in early 2009
May 7-10, 2009
Broadway Blockbuster: - Something Special is Coming…a show so big, so offensive, so funny, so new, we aren’t allowed to tell you the name until midnight, February 24, 2009. When we do, the tickets will fly out the doors! What we CAN say is this musical won more Tony Awards (12) than any other show in Broadway history!

Glimmer, Glimmer and Shine: - family secrets, choices made and a short career as the trumpet section of a jazz band are the setting of this poignant, raucous and jazzy play. Two generations, estrangement and reconciliation, all set to the rhythms of jazz and the limelight.

Season Option #2: H.M.S Pinafore-In Concert. – this classic operaetta in concert form, featuring a full orchestra and some of the best operatic talent around.
November 19-22, 2009
HMS Pinafore is the second season option for the 2009 Mainstage Season. Option #1 is the Festival of New American Musicals offering. Patrons pick – something old or something new!

An Evening with Fritz Coleman-Emmy Award Winner! humorous observations on life and news in Southern California, a Southern California broadcasting icon, NBC4’s weathercaster is well known for his sense of humor. He brings his stand up comedy, topical dialogue and unique insight to the Covina Center for the Performing Arts.

Not Fade Away: A 50’s and 60’s Rock n Roll Extravaganza: a musical tribute to the 1950’s and 60’s. Featuring songs from Buddy Holly to the Beatles.

In the Mood: A Spectacular 1930s and 40s Musical Tribute featuring Company B: The Andrews Sisters Musical Tribute Relive the sounds of the 1930’s and 40’s. From Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy to Lullaby of Broadway. Company B’s tribute to the Andrews Sisters brims with energy and excitement.

Rick Najera’s Latinologues-Direct from Broadway! Comedic, poignant, these monologues about the Latino experience in America were created by Rick Najera. Latinologues made its Broadway debut September, 2005, running for 16 weeks.
