Some of my favorite songs of all time:
"Look In My Eyes"
"Flight"
"The Man in 37a"
To not appreciate his work is to not have listened to enough of it to realize his incredible talent(s).

Why do you think Sweet Smell is so underappreciated?
"For Susan" is a lovely song.

Posted: 1/24/05 at 2:04pmThe Man in 37-A is from a musical Craig has been working on entitled Actor, Lawyer, Indian Chief. I workshopped the show under the title Looking West a few years ago. It has a lovely score (especially Man in 37-A and Looking West), but the book was weak. Craig was great and I still think the character of Barry should have a solo. How can the featured comic relief NOT have a solo in a musical??

I agree that he is under-appreciated. I saw Eric Michael Gillette in Cast of Thousands and it really exposed me to CC as a gifted writer. I've heard his class is amazing but he is really hard on you - especially if you are a "singer." Never got to take it while I was in NYC but was interested.
Last I heard, he and Marvin are hard at work on Bullets Over Broadway (which I think will be brilliant!). The movie plays like a stage play anyway. instead of writing a play, they can be writing a musical with the starlet and gun moll. it screams to be a musical. here's hoping he gets a Bway hit soon.

I agree with you, Mister Matt... That seems off to me too.
I figured the song was from Actor, Lawyer, Indian Chief. I wish there was somewhere I could hear clips from that...
YES! Here's hoping he gets a success soon!

Testing, one, two, three. I tried posting this earlier and it didn't show up.
I took his class, and it was awesome. He's great at getting to the heart of a song, and clearing out all the other junk out of the way. That's why it may seem like he's hard on singers, because he doesn't let you hide behind your instrument. There has to be some truth on display, before the pyrotechnics.
And, he's a wonderful composer. I disagree with the poster who said he's never done the job. I just think the guy works best in miniature, with simplicity of detail, honest emotion and well crafted melodies. One "Look in My Eyes" is worth more than dozens of the usual suspects you find on Broadway these days.

Hello there,
When I first heard of Craig Carnelia is on radio being mentioned by Marvin Hamlisch when they work together on the musical 'Sweet Smell of Success'
I've got a chance to listen to the excepts from the musical and I just love it.
'At The Fountain' musical number is very good.
At the moment he and his good friend Marvin are hard at work on 'Bullets Over Broadway' and I bet that the musical is getting good than 'Sweet Smell of Success'.

That's exactly it, birdlives.
He does work best in miniature, and his character studies of a housewife in WORKING or a prom queen in LIFE AFTER HIGH SCHOOL are terrific examples of this.
And "Flight." What an amazing song that is. One of his greatest achievements.

I know this is a really old thread, but I've recently fallen in love with the song "The Man in 37A". I did a search for it, and this is what came up.
Does anyone else love this song?
Do we know what's going on with Carnelia and Hamlisch's Bullets Over Broadway?

I love his work!
I'm singing FLIGHT for a showcase this summer!

Posted: 3/19/08 at 1:20amI saw his concert at the Laurie Beechman Theatre last week and adore his music. I think "Diary Of A Homecoming Queen" was incredible, but I really loved pretty much every song presented that night.

Life on Earth was a wonderful showcase of his work. It will most likely be licensed as song cycle/revue of sorts. Such a wonderful lyricist, with beautiful imagery in his songs.
p.s. I can hardly wait for more of Carey Anderson. She did some amazing work on that stage..grippingly simple, deeply subtexual with a glowing charisma. The girl is special.

I'll also add to the Carey Anderson love. That girl was fantastic and I want to see her do other things.
I really hope they record this because I think everyone should hear it, especially with this group of performers.

I've been a fan of his since the television version of "Working". I love "Is There Life After High School". (You REALLY need to get a copy of Karen Mason's "Not So Simply Broadway" for the definitive version of "Nothing Really Happened". It works much better as a solo and they use a cello in it. It's fabulous.)
I've never heard anything about the songs that Craig and Marvin wrote for that play about Mary McCarthy and Lillian Hellman that starred Cherry Jones and Swoosie Kurtz. How were they?

Posted: 3/19/08 at 6:10pmI just saw Craig Carnelia at his 'Life on Earth' revue the other night, and I have sad news: The 'Bullets Over Broadway' musical is dead. He says they couldn't get the rights to the movie, even with Woody Allen on board. It had something to do with the movie's producer. What a shame.

Does anyone know who sang The Man in 37A in the Goodspeed production? According to castalbums.org, the cast members were Blake Adams, Brad Anderson (7), Doug Ballard, Hunter Bell (7), Reed Birney, Lisa Brescia (2), Craig Carnelia (25), Jacob Heimer, Kevyn Morrow (2), Roger Seyer (2), Mark Edgar Stevens (2).
(Ignore the numbers, those are how many cast albums the performers are listed in on the site.)
P.S. I'll add to the love for the recent Laurie Beechman show!
