Has anyone seen Dr. Sex... Thinking about going this weekend...How is it???

I've been DYING to see this and was thinking about going Sunday night. But I can't find out if there's a rush policy...
I havent found a single review of it on any message board, which is kind of...well odd. I hope they are actually filling seats...
I'm waiting to see if it shows up on The Gold Club anytime soon.

Not only have I seen it, I was in the original workshop. It's dreadful. Just dreadful. Oh could I tell you stories......
Truth is, we spent every music rehearsal busting up at how ridiculous the lyrics were and were plain STUNNED when Chicago crowds took to it.
Sample
"Yes I'm homo of course with a hetero twist"
"I'm your ever loving little gall wasp"
and the gems keep coming. The humor is without wit and it fails to say anything new. I'd say stay away.
On a side note, though mildly crazy (in a good way), the writers of this show are lovely people. Thought it was only fair of me to mention that.
So, I take it this is a silly look at Dr. Kinsey, far different from last year's terrific bio-pic?
And Brian Noonan?

That's a shame to hear that from someone who was a part of it. If they're such lovely people, chitown, wouldn't you want to support the show?
Regardless of what you've said, I'm still quite excited about the show. I adore the film KINSEY as well as I've always been intrigued into the life of Dr. Kinsey so I still plan on seeing the show.

iluv,
Are you serious? Why would I support a show that is crap just because I think the creative team are nice people? Are we supposed to enjoy and support all theatre just because 'nice people' are involved. That's just ridiculous.
Now - that being said, someone asked about the show. Clearly, at this point, (as an original member of the creative team) I am the most qualified to reply. So why challenge what you don't know?
True, the show is potty humor at best. If you like that sort of thing, great! It takes all kinds to make the world go round. Go see it, maybe you'll love it. If you do, I and everyone originally involved would seriously have to question your taste - but by all means, go ahead. I would NEVER tell someone not to see a show. Again, I was merely answering the question at hand.

Wow, I'm really surprised by this. Maybe it's improved since then? I mean, shows in their first readings/workshops can be pretty rough and can change drastically by the time they have a full production, so I'm not sure it's fair to judge a piece on the way it was back when.
I've just heard such great things from musical theatre writers (a highly critical bunch) who saw it in the ASCAP workshop in LA and I heard great things about people who saw it in Chicago as well - they all thought it was well written, sharp, and ready for the big time.
Hopefully I will enjoy it as well.

no - I saw the full version in Chicago as well. They only added a few lines - they editted NOTHING. My opinion and the opinion of many who were deeply involved in this show is that it is indeed a stupid show. Awful music, awful dialogue, just awful.
I'm always amazed by people who enjoy it. It's so low brow.
Then again, try giving an educated opinion based on more personal experience on a specific topic than anyone on these boards and not get slaughtered.
Honestly, some of you guys just LOVE to challenge people. And for what? Someone asked about Dr. Sex - I was involved in the creation of Dr. Sex, so I thought I'd give my opinion. Is there anything wrong with that? But somehow, I've now had two people with ZERO knowledge of the show (I mean, you haven't even seen it) trying to overthrow my statement. It's just bizarre. Honestly. People who really work professionally in theatre don't do that sort of thing. We don't have time I guess.

I've been a board lurker for a year now and I have to agree with chitown. He was clearly stating his opinion about a project he had done and everyone jumped on him. You've never even seen the show and you feel the need to kick him down. Why is everything so personal on here? We all have opinions people. However it seems that if someone doesn't agree with yours you crucify them. There is no need to be so biting. Oh, and PS....I saw the show in Chicago and thought it was childish.

The problem I have with posters like Chitown is that they don't just say they didn't enjoy the show or think it could be better. They slaughter it. They turn people away from the show. With attitudes like that, theater will fail. It is already, as LaChiusia puts it, a very slowly dying art. Theater isn't what it was 50 years ago and it never will be. It caters to couch potatoes and it caters to "flashy" entertainment. Yes, that's BUSINESS. And it's SHOW BUSINESS. I know, I've heard it a million times. But when you're going to say you don't like a show, don't put it so horribly.
I admit, I'm a WICKED basher. But when people ask me what I think of it, really wanting to know, I give them my reason. And, in that reason, I always state - "I feel a little strange because I meet very few WICKED-haters, so don't really take my opinion. Ask around, you'll find other people who enjoyed it." I've had that conversation a million times with tourists in the city on the TKTS line looking through the NYC guides not knowing what to see.
But why, WHY, chitown, put down a show so terribly? You gave reasoning, yes. But there is chance for change and improvement. And, as a performer, think to support the other actors currently performing in DR. SEX. Allow the theater world to see the piece, say to people, "I didn't enjoy working on it but I'm just one person. You might love it!"
If we continue to turn people away from so many new shows, how will theater ever continue to grow?

What about Jared Bradshaw? How is he?
Seeing as how none of the current cast was in the Chicago production, it might be nice to reserve judgement until we actually hear a report from someone who's seen the show thats running right now in NYC...

to the bitter ball change in Chitown!!!
It seems painfully obvious that you have some bad memories
from your Dr. Sex experience...maybe you need to get some?
So, now i'll take over as the MORE qualified person to respond
to you... your production was over 2 years ago, and
now the show has been rewritten, book and music.
There is no doubt that Dr. Sex is a romp, but it has
also become....very unbeknownst to you...a show about love
and the telling story of a pioneer in this field.
So i challenge you to come to NYC and experience some sex the
new york kind of way....it's too windy in chicago anyway!

you folks are unreal! I gave an opinion - based on personal and professional experience. Don't ask for one if you don't want it.
As for having a bad experience - not true in the least. Quit guessing what I'm about - you have no idea. I rather enjoyed my time working on the show as I made many friends. After all, it's not often that you all get to work together on a 'real stinker'.
Now iluvtheatre trash - if you re-read my post, you'll notice that I told you to see the show anyway and see what you thought. I am, however, more than entitled to express MY opinion however harshly or mildly as I please. In my opinion, sugar coating our opinions and feelings on theatre will DEFINITELY lead to it's demise, as it should always invoke feeling on a grand level. That being said, let's examine some quotes from one of your posts regarding the show 'Lennon'.
Posted by iluvtheatretrash - I hated WICKED and gave it a second chance to fall in love. I hated it more on that second visit.
I was bored to sobs at SWEET CHARITY. While the score is enjoyable, I just don't understand why ANYONE would want to make a musical out of that story.
Personally, I'm not a fan of THE LION KING. While the direction and costuming is simply stunning and one of the most brilliant things that will ever hit the Broadway stage - the show itself bores me to sobs.
Hmmm......"Pot? It's kettle on the phone." Nice work. - Finally, if you're going to express your opinions of me, let me give you a little tip - get a new headshot dear. It does nothing for you.

There have been a number of rewrites on the show since it's last staging.
It is still campy, but it is tightened. It is more in the vein of Hairspray -- cheesy and fun...but not quite as B-movie as hairspray. It is not "Kinsey," though, for those of you who are hoping for that. It is blending styles, and...if that gets accepted, the show will be a hit. if not, people will be bored.
At this point, we can only wait for audiences to let us know how they feel about it.

"I'm in love with my Zoology professor"
"But he's making such a monkey out of me"
Ah yes - pure poetry.
Still no first hand reports on this, huh? Wow, this is like a first. Anyone hear about the rumor that Pam Hall has been replaced as director?
