Hopped the subway for a visit to DR. SEX, the Alfred Kinsey-based musical at the Peter Norton Space, last night. It's no wonder the show received poor reviews. Audiences and critics these days take everything so seriously. They walk in expecting the star-studded and brilliant film "Kinsey". Instead, they got a comedic, sexy romp that only highlights a few major points of Dr. Kinsey's life. While the cast is fabulous and all appear to be having such a fun time with the material, there is one person to be on the alert about...
Jennifer Simard is a force to look out for. This girl's range is MASSIVE. To hear her belting, then breaking out in the cutest soprano, is simply fantastic. The highlight of her performance, of course, being her 11 o'clock number - "The Doctor's Wife". I can only imagine she brings the house down every single night just like she did last night. There were "whoops" of joy after she finished plus a huge amount of applause - a reception that she was allto deserving of.
While the film "Kinsey" is a highly emotional one, DR. SEX is just a lot of fun. If you go into the Peter Norton Space, a small but very cozy theater, expecting to laugh and have a great time, you will. Of course, the show is NOT for prudes. If you don't mind laughing at and talking everso blatantly about sex, trust me, you'll have a blast.
All around me, everyone was talking at intermission about how much fun they were having. Everyone was laughing and enjoying themselves.
Sit back, relax, and prepare to laugh till your sides hurt. DR. SEX was just plain fun and definately something for someone who needs a little night of escapist theater and a few good laughs.
