I just got 'Dude: The Highway life" on CD, and I love it. If you can get into Nell Carter singing country than this is for you, but I do have a few questions...
1. This was a terrible disaster on Broadway... Did anyone see it??
2. The CD has 24 songs on it. The first half from the Original cast and the others from an album called 'Salome Bey Sings songs from DUDE'. The list of songs in the production on IBDB are almost totally different, with only 14 of them on my CD. Is this because of the changes made during production?
3. Is there no 'Book' to this musical?
4. Why did it flop? What's the story?
5. I know there is a section about it in the book Second Act trouble, but it seems like it was a colossal mess, with people being fired etc. Anybody know any scoop about it whatsoever??
Thanks.

It was the grand canyon of flops
It probably had changes on opening night. Add Via Galactica to the mix & old Galt ( who writes great music ) had 2 colossal flops in a row

Was this the show for which they gutted the Broadway theater to make it "in the round?"
Yup
They also did the same theater ( Broadway ) for Candide
Wait, they gutted the Broadway theatre? Do pictures of this exist? I find it hard to imagine. How long did it stay that way? AND Who handed out the money to put it back they way it is?
It is amazing the theater looks as good as it does . They gutted the orchestra & put up scenery but did not actually demolish the ceiling or sidewalls.
I assume pictures exist somewhere but no idea where that might be
