From Playbill.com:

"Veteran stage and screen stars Dame Maggie Smith and Dame Judi Dench will guest on 'The Charlie Rose Show' April 25.

Smith and Dench will discuss their latest joint project, the new film 'Ladies in Lavender.' The film, from writer-director Charles Dance, concerns two elderly sisters whose lives are changed in pre-World War II Cornwall by the arrival of a young Jewish musician. Smith and Dench play the sisters with Daniel Bruhl as the musician from Krakow.

Maggie Smith won a Tony Award for her performance in Lettice and Lovage and was also nominated for her work in Night and Day and Private Lives. Judi Dench won a Tony for her work in Amy's View."

I love both of these women. Two of the greatest actresses to ever grace the stage and the silver screen. I would love for either or both to return to Broadway in something.

Maggie Smith for Madame Morrible, perhaps? JOKING...ONLY JOKING!

I was just about to post this.

They are both phenomenally entertaining as interview subjects individually and, being best friends in real life, even better together. I saw Smith in "Lettice and Lovage" (maybe the greatest comedic performance I've ever seen) adn Dench in "Amy's View" (sublime) and it's about time for both of them to come back to Broadway -- together. Too bad the "Breath of Life" transfer from London was cancelled. Some enterprising producer needs to find them a joint vehicle ASAP.

The two of them on Charlie Rose tonight is a must-see.

Any ideas of what would be a good vehicle for the both of them?

Arsenic and Old Lace (though the sister roles aren't really juicy enough for them)

How about a stage version of "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane" with them trading off the roles of Jane and Blanche every other performance (ala Reilly and Hoffman in True West)?

I was excited to see Maggie Smith exit the stage door of the Longacre Theatre after the Sunday performance of "Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf?" on 4/24/05. She is one of my favorites.

I keep saying that Dench should be Morrible. However they need something much better than Wicked to showcase what they can do. One of my life goals is to see Judi perform live on stage.

Um, can we not insult one of the greatest stage actresses by even thinking about putting her in something like Wicked?!!

it's too bad that "LEGENDS" the Mary Martin/Carol Channing vehicle from the late 80's was so awful (though Gary Beach was a lot of fun in it) because the concept of two aging silver screen stars who fought, and even stole the other's husband, is a great concept for these two. Dame Judi would be great in the Carol Channing role (Sylvia), and Dame Maggie in the Mary Martin role (Leatrice) would be great casting.

If you haven't read James Kirkwood's book "Diary of a Mad Playwright" i recommend it as a great juicy, albeit one-sided, account of a play that didn't ever make it to it's Broadway opening.
