My high school is doing Damn Yankees as its musical this year and I was thinking was Damn Yankees a big success on Broadway and do people love this show like people love Fiddler or Wicked? Also are there any other people out there who have played Smokey the baseball player?

Never been in it nor have I ever seen a Broadway production of it. I suggest you see the film Gwen Verdon is superb.

I did... I liked the movie but the guy playing the devil was very deadpan... Gwen was good and very funny... Wasnt Bob Fosse her partner during "Whose Got The Pain?" My character Smokey is really dumb and he was just really stupid in the movie so Im just gonna be as dumb

Damn Yankees was the first Broadway show I ever saw, the 199(4?) revival. I was 7. I remember loving it, though I was very young. It still holds a special place in my heart as my very first show.

i couldn't tell you if it was a commercial success but i was briefly directing a production and playing the devil (imho the best male lead in the show) but unfortunately since i created a production that woulda cost half a million dollars the theater wouldn't allow it.

Damn Yankees is a great show that is very underrated. It has a beautiful story! When I saw it last year the guy who played Smokey was dumb and so funy, it had this hard Brooklyn accent with his mouth usually on the side...great show and great music!

Well, Damn Yankees wasn't underrated in its time (or even now if you consider the HUNDREDS of productions of it every year). The original won 7 Tony Awards (including one for the "very deadpan" Ray Walston as Mr. Applegate -- the definitive interpretation of the role) and it was a huge hit running for over 1000 performances (back when that really meant something).

I've seen Smokey played different ways. My favorite portrayal of him was as someone with major A.D.D. This was a riot. Went over extremely well with the audience. My advice would to be search for what you see in the character... not just mimick what some man in a movie 50 years ago did. Cheers.
