I was always great at getting the blocks of choreography, it was just connecting them and remembering what comes next that got me. I must admit, when I was taking classes, I was doing much better at dance auditions becaused I did get used to learning combinations more quickly and how to smoothly connect blocks of choreography because I would get my body used to the more common steps and combinations.

I never liked dance auditions as I was a very slow learner. I would eventually get it, but by then it was always too late. I remember the first show I got cast in professionally (42nd Street; stock). My dance audition was horrible. I kept bumping into people, etc. I left there feeling so dejected. I was cast a couple of weeks later only to find out, that that's what the casting people remembered about me. When the show finally opened I was in "tip-tap" shape.

I'm dreading all types of dance auditions I'll have in the future.
Shows in my high school have no dance audition and the choreography is pretty easy IMO, but I'm dreading college and future show dance auditions. I've never been much of a dancer, and I think I'll have to take a few classes before high school ends (3 long years left.) On a side note, does anyone know how much dance is stressed in auditions for a musical theater major?

AHAHHAHAHHAHHAHAHHAHAHHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA....Good lord ponine, how old are you? 10? 11? 12? No one was attacking you, people are just stating different things. You SHOULD NOT be on this board if you cant handle a little critisism every once in awhile, cuz hunny, with the way you react to peoples comments, you will get ALOT of it. So how about YOU stick it up YOUR butt, and take a breather.

Ponine. You most certainly did ASSume. You ASSumed that Bwaytheatre11 was being ignorant by saying that you should get used to hard dance auditions. You shot back with a catty comment about how he shouldn't ever tell you what to do again. That's an assumption, love.

And are you 10 or 11? Because those sophomoric comments don't come from normal 18+ year olds.

Hey, I just wanted to thank everyone for their suggestions on how best to solve my mini-plight. Although some responses were a bit, well, laconic, I greatly appreciate all of the suggestions. Thanks especially to those who left the sincere and positive responses :). I really appreciate it...and don't worry- I'm a big girl; I can tolerate a "get used to it" and even accept it as true !

I was very lucky. I rarely had to audition, since many of the choreographers I worked for were familiar with my work. In my first Broadway show I was told in a very off hand manner: "You're in show. Audition begin on February 2nd. Be there. Goodbye!"

onceadancer - May I ask who you are? I'm always interested in famous performers lurking on the boards.

ponine24601 - Don't sweat it. All you need to do is learn not to take people too seriously. I also love your icon. Eden Forever!!!

Everyone else - Don't fret dance auditions. Just keep, or start, taking classes. Smiling is always a good thing. Definitely do not look down. That will kill you in an audition. It makes you look unsure and confused. Just play to the judges and make them love you. The auditions will become easier with time.

Zoran, I hate to disappont you, but I was not anyone famous or well-known. Just one of those dancers who went from show to show, for the simple reason that I did not want to travel in the Ballet Russes or Ballet Theatre. Broadway was a wonderful place to be in those days! My husband children and grandchildren have no conception of dancing or performing on Broadway, so for over half a century I really have not spoken to anyone about it. (Except to my friends with whom I danced.) This board actually gives me an outlet for my views and perceptions. Unfortunately, my brain is not what it used to be!!!!!

onceadancer2 - You didn't disappoint me. I think that it is amazing that you were on Broadway, even if only as a dancer. I'm impressed.
