That was a well thought out response, and I do agree with many of your points. But, I also think there is a possibility, though small, that Sondheim and Furth might be kidding themselves when they say this isn't the story of a gay man. Again, I'm not sure myself, I just think it's possible.
Oh, it's possible! I mean, I choose to believe them -- and what they say is what I see in the story -- but it is possible. I just don't know why, if this is a question of what they wanted to create for the audience to see and experience, they would lie. You know? It's not a question that reflects on their lives; denying that Bobby is gay wasn't denying that either of them were gay, just as creating a gay character doesn't mean you have to be gay. It reflects on what they wanted to the audience to go through with this character.

I didn't say he was too old for the part, I said I THINK he's too old. It's just my personal opinion. It's not just about being too old, I think it's how he would play it.
