Those of us who saw him will never forget him. Those of us who knew him miss him still.
Such an amazing voice!

And his singing of "Love Can't Happen" from Grand Hotel was another glorious moment -- no one else who did the part during the original run (and I saw them all) ever did what Caroll did. I still miss him and his talent, now going on to 20 years after the fact.
His voice and tone were unique and stunning. One of Broadway's greatest talents. He was taken from us far too soon.
This is a real gem- thank you! I have always admired the Grand Hotel cast recording for adding the bonus track of 'Love Can't Happen...'- it was a gracious gesture.
There's an audio of a final concert he gave at the 92nd Street Y before he died. He had to sit in a chair ("like Mabel Mercer," he said), but his lungs were still strong. He was assisted in the concert by his friends Judy Kaye, Judy Kuhn and Barbara Cook.

I went to the Memorial Service for David Carroll and Barbara Cook's remarks were the best of the morning. Think what a duo that would have made!!!
She's on the concert recording, and Wally Harper is David's accompanist.
