Dear Broadway Performers Thinking About Doing a Solo Cd...

stop singing songs by Randy Newman, Billy Joel, or Joni Mitchell on your solo cd's. They're over-done! If you can't think of anything to sing, how about, oh, songs from actual shows? Weird concept huh?

I do. Well, if it is there first cd. I mean cd 2 or whatever can have pop songs or jazz standards or whatnot but I like a little bit of musical theatre thrown in. The thing about broadway performers who do broadway cds, is that they ALWAYS do the same songs. I think they need to branch out and do songs that is unfamiliar or familiar songs that doesn't already have 100 variations of it.

I usually would agree with the original post but some of Randy Newman's songs are very theatrical. "Marie" comes to mind. Mandy Patinkin used it in a medley on his first solo cd.

And Betty Buckley took Billy Joel's "And So It Goes" and linked it beautifully with "Everything Must Change."

Talking about Mandy's debut cd, does anyone else love how he screams on at least 3-4 songs on the album. This is one of my all time favorite albums. I hate to say it but I love screamers on my turntable and in my bed.

Anything Anthony Warlow decides to record is just fine by me. Hell, I'd even listen to him sing "Memory" and not say a word.

BobbyBubby--I feel your pain from a listener and fan point of view. But one of the primary reasons Broadway artists want to record their own CDs is to branch out and perform songs they might not get to sing in a theatre at any point in their stage careers. So they look for material that is "out of character"... or even out of genre.

They don't feel like being locked into any rigid molds. I'm sure you can relate to that in your own life. We all probably can.

EDIT: I will add, though, that the best artists know that this is a "two way street." They should be singing songs for themselves as well as their fans. Both. Liz Callaway has been great at "trying to please everyone" with her CDs. She's sung the songs we'd like her to sing, as well as ones we never thought she would consider. It's a nice mix. Variety is the spice of life, and it shows me that she cares about her own opinions as well as others.

Did you guys ever catch Jennifer Holliday singing "Political Science" on Ally McBeal? The arrangement was out of this world and Jennifer brought the house down!

I don't LOVE Randy Newman but some of his music lends itself well to big dramatic interpretations.

Kitz-- You amaze me more and more everyday. Anthony Warlow is a VOCAL GOD. If he put out a cd with him singing commercial jingles, I would buy it in a heartbeat.

Wasn't Kristin Chenoweth's cd full of Broadway songs?

And yes, I like people who write their own music too.
And then, do you know Monseiur Marius, I believe I was a little in love with you.

I think it is also important to remember, that some of the artists who make solo debuts are looking to be recording singer/songwriters and have that talent. Others are looking to branch out-though few end up on the other side unless they are famous in a Hollywood capacity. Others simply want to hear themselves sing. Someone like Adam Pascal wants to really make his way as a singer/songwriter-as he did before he became involved in Rent. Heather Headley wanted to let the world know she could SING! And someone like Julie Andrews made her albums-popular albums-that people listend to because she was known all over the world.

I can understand this debate from the perspective of the fan and from the singer. The singer doesn't want to be pigeonholed as only a singer of showtunes (take American Idol for example..when they tell someone that their voice is more for Broadway it is meant almost as an insult) and the fan wants to hear them sing the songs that caused them to be a fan in the first place. That is why I think a performer should do a nice mixture of the two on a CD. Maybe the first time only include a few non-theatrical tracks and then on a second album start including more of it. I for one love getting solo albums of showtunes because I get to hear a performer I admire (i.e. Anthony Warlow) singing songs from shows or roles that they may never actually perform in.
