A gypsy run-through is a performance of a musical still in development with no sets or costumes or orchestra. It's fully staged with the bare essentials--chairs, tables, working props, etc.
Thus, The Pirate Queen was the final dress rehearsal last night--not a gypsy run-through. I think people are confused because the producer was referring to the performance being for an audience of gypsies (aka the Broadway community).

I've been to productions that were called gypsy run-throughs that were actually final dress rehearsals. Usually, Liza was involved. She likes to call them that.
The "old-timers" like her tend to call them that, it's what they used to be called.

"I have also met him in person, and I find him to be quite funny actually. Arrogant and often misinformed, but still funny."

Really? Well, it makes sense, especially in the context that the producer was speaking of.
I was introduced to the definition I gave by Stuart Ostrow, who would probably be classified as an "old timer" though the man certainly has much youth at heart.

I ain't scared of Liza. Bring it! I'll arm wrestle her over it. Though I bet she'd win.
