Hey yall, I have yet to see this play, and was wondering what people who have seen it think of it? I mean, it will definitely last until June, cause it is sure to get multiple tony noms right???
I personally enjoyed this one. Richard Thomas was quite good.
It's a lot of talk but, to me, interesting talk. The entire cast is superb. And yes, I think it will stick around for a while.
It's not an easy play...you have to pay attention. And it helps to get there early enough to read the liner notes in the Playbill to brush up on German history if, like me, details of historical perspective elude you. But I liked it a lot, even if I, no doubt, missed some of the subtext. My husband, who IS a history wonk, cites it as the play he has most enjoyed seeing during the past couple of seasons. The performances were all solid. I'd be surprised if it doesn't win multiple awards.
Yes, iflit is quite right. The first act is a bit slow, because there is a lot of background story to be told. This show is well worth the ticket price go and enjoy!
(hi flit!)
I've seen this show three times in New York and once in London. It's a brilliant work of theatre. If you're not into politics, this probably will not be your cup of tea.
The show is strong, no doubt about it, but it would have fallen apart without the genious direction that it has, because it cast just isn't that strong. I can't see one single cast member being nominated or recnognized - I just wish the cast had the power that the book and direction have, then it would be even better.

The English "Democracy" cast was so far superior to the American cast, unlike "Copenhagen" which had an equally outstanding US and UK production. I do think it will be around for at least a couple more months, but wouldn't be surprised if it will begin to struggle once "Streetcar," "Pillowman," "Doubt," etc. start competing for ticket purchases.
