From Playbill.com:
"The Broadway cast of William Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, led by Academy Award winner Denzel Washington, is currently in previews for an April 3 opening at Broadway's Belasco Theatre.
Washington portrays Brutus, the confidant turned betrayer ultimately responsible for the assassination of the Emperor of Rome."
It looks very contemporary...I suppose this revival has been modernized. I would definitely love to see how it works. If he attaches his name to it, I would imagine it had to be pretty damn good. I love the picture.

I am excited about this. Very excited. I will have no money this summer, b/c I need to see like, 45 things.
That picture looks great! Love the setting.

I was also surprised by the modern look, but the visual it gives is very effective.
The guy on the left of Denzel looks very familiar...any ideas who he is?

Posted: 3/23/05 at 5:32pmIt's set 30 years in the future, after "the oil wars". Kind of post apocalyptic. Sure, there's modern day dress, but they've left the text alone, and you hardly notice the modernisation. Great cast, too.

To anyone who's seen it:
Can we expect a "Best Actor" nom for Denzel? Or, does that go unsaid?
#6re: Denzel Washington 'Julius Caesar' Photo
Posted: 3/23/05 at 5:45pmI've yet to see it, but I am sure Denzel will be nominated.

Posted: 3/23/05 at 7:35pmI was lucky enough to have see this on the 12th! WOW, if you get the chance do go. Denzel was outstanding as Brutus. The modern set was a bit off putting at first, but as the play started it just worked so well. I hope the this will get an extension as I would love to see it again.

Posted: 3/23/05 at 8:42pmYay! I can actually post about this, even though I'm all the way in Tucson, AZ. I saw it last Sunday and I thought it was great. Started off a bit slow, but really picked up and wouldn't let you go. I think Denzel will pick up a nod and probably a handful of others. I can even see Denzel winning right now.

To answer Melissa Errico Fan, I know she starts bleeding in her leg. I wasn't watching her though before she started bleeding (I felt that Jessica Hecht and the woman playing Caesar's wife were very strange and Eamonn Walker as Mark Antony needs to work on his annunciation). This production, however, was amazing. Denzel (who makes a point of signing autographs for everyone who waits outside the stage door, according to an usher. I don't like getting autographs so we didn't wait after.) was great, but my favorite actor had to be Jack Willis as Casca (look for a Featured Actor in a play nomination for him) he took what was sort of a loser role (compared to Brutus, Cassius, and Caesar) and stole just about every scene he was in. Colm Feore, who played Cassius was incredible as well.
I was rather confused about the setting. I picked up that they were in some sort of futuristic state (everyone has to wear an ID card around their necks) but I didn't pick anything up about post-apocalyptic "Oil Wars." At some points it seemed as though it were being performed in the ruins of Rome (one scene in particular felt as though we were on the inside of a ruined Coliseum). As an earlier poster said however, it doesn't really matter as they fully maintain the original text.
Also, to anyone who saw anything else recently in the Belasco Theatre, is it in really bad shape or did they just trash it to make the set which is essentially a collection of ruins spread out into the theatre. The fronts of the boxes on the mezzanine level were ripped out and there were only one or two tattered looking seats in each. Actors from the show, however sat in these boxes at various points in the show so maybe they just trashed those boxes for this production.
If you have any way of getting tickets (and we got house seats for a Saturday matinee the day before in row C of the center orchestra) go, you won't regret this. Anytime you can see Shakespeare done well and anytime you can see a famous actor give a knockout performance on Broadway you should go, and this is definitely one of those opportunities.

Posted: 3/24/05 at 1:03amI saw Dracula at the Belasco. I did notice it was a little run down...but I love the dark wood and stained glass in the theatre. It's sooo gothic...perfect for Dracula. The mens bathroom on the second level needs to be redone...I just hope they can redo the whole theatre but maintain the aged gothic appearance.
