Deven May kicks off Bat Boy in London with three new songs !

The first London preview of the new version of Bat Boy is tonight... they have chosen the hall of doom that is the Shaftesbury Theatre. This produciton has already played at the West Yorkshire Playhouse for a season so I guess it should be in very good shape already.

The composers have added three new songs for this version and in previews tickets start from a bargain £5 (up to £27.50). I am defitnely going to see it this week.

Hope you enjoye it! I saw it a few weeks ago in regional theatre and really enjoyed it! Looking forward to hearing the new songs, too, since the show did have some weak spots.

Details of the song changes:


Three songs featured in the New York premiere will be replaced in the new production. “Ugly Boy” has been superseded by “Hey Freak”, “Ugly Freak Two” by “What You Wanna Do” and “Inside Your Heart” by “Mine All Mine.”

Well, I'll reserve judgment until I hear the changes, but I liked "Inside Your Heart". "Ugly Boy" seemed effective, too, so it will be interesting to see what they changed. The scene that I thought was embarrassingly bad was the one where Pan comes out of the woods and the little woodland creatures seem to be "blessing" the love of Edgar and his "sister". The whole show is, obviously, tongue-in-cheek, but this scene was just plain BAD! I was hoping that was being cut or replaced! Maybe it already has; I haven't read much about the London production.

Jeesh, "Inside your Heart" was one of the hits of the show,no? I don't get it. Several reviews specifically mentioned the song's ability to work on two levels -- as a parody of a love duet, and, in terms of the story, as a real love song. Is it possible these songs have merely been re-thought (and re-titled?) Odd cuts, to my mind.
