Perhaps, as I first did when I saw the story on Playbill, you passed over the news of Di Goldene Kale. An opera/operetta? In Yiddish? I wasn't expecting much but I was completely and utterly charmed by this production. Yes, the scale is small (and a bit high school theatre) but the talent is grand. The story crumbles a bit in act 2 but the voices are gorgeous and the show is very amusing. Please see this show while you can.

I will also add that the story partially takes place in Russia and I think it would be a great companion to Fiddler on the Roof if you'd like to have a bit of the sense of that world with less pathos and drama. Or you could always just see this show instead if Fiddler tickets are a bit too expensive. They have $20 student tickets.

Thanks, Snarker, for posting this. Yiddish theatre crumbled suddenly, because of the Holocaust and the desire of Western European and North and South American Jews to learn the language of their new homelands. It's always nice to hear about a production that echoes this once vibrant form of theatre.

Audrey, the Phantom Phanatic, who nonetheless would rather be Jean Valjean, who knew how to make lemonade out of lemons.

Well, this is pleasant surprise.

"The Off-Broadway staging will kick off its return engagement July 4 and is scheduled to run through Aug. 28 at the Museum of Jewish Heritage in Lower Manhattan. The production features a cast of 20 and an orchestra of 14; NYTF is currently working to bring back the show's original cast."
