Diana DeGarmo in HAIRSPRAY starting February 7? What about BROOKLYN tour?

I just read on CNN that Diana DeGarmo will be entering the cast of Hairspray on February 7. But then I found the article on Playbill that says she'll be in the national tour of Brooklyn with Melba Moore and Cleavant Derricks. Is she doing both? What's going on? I never even remember hearing an official announcement of her doing Hairspray. Can someone explain?

She will be in hiarspray for a few months then head on tour with Brooklyn!

Hmm. Never heard any official announcement about her in Hairspray, and I couldn't find anything on Playbill about it. Seems like they would make a bigger deal about it.

Looks like Diana is going into theatre, no? First West Side Story in San Jose, then Hairspray and then Brooklyn? I wonder if she can act.

She loves theatre and wants to go into it. She got great reviews for west.
THey wouldn't hype hairspray up that much because it is just a supporting role. Brooklyn she will be the lead.

Actually it's getting hyped pretty good. A google news search found the AP has picked up the original release from Broadway.com and BroadwayWorld.com and it's been syndicated into almost 80 newspapers and online sources (including MTV.com and the home page for MSN.com) just on Tuesday. She also got a mention on Showbiz Tonight and several Fox affiliates local news broadcasts. She has an interview that is being played on Inside Edition tomorrow (mostly about her USO tour in December/New Years) and I'm wondering if Hairspray is mentioned.

In short, the casting news is getting a decent amount of play. More than I would have expected.

The Brooklyn tour doesn't start up right away. She'll be in Hairspray and once she, leaves it's time for the tour.

Playbill.com, Braodway.com, BraodwayWorld.com, the news, radios and other sources have all been talking about her casting in HAirsprayl

She can act, and has great reviews of her acting. They won't cast someone that doesn't belong in the role. I can totally see her in the role. I just hope people give her a chance, and don't come back here describing every flaw.

The casting of Degarmo was on local (CT) news last night AND this morning (different networks), so they're really hyping it. Interesting!

I must have somehow blatantly missed it. I check BWW and Playbill.com everyday, and TheatreMania every other day. Weird. And I didn't realize that she would be playing Penny. I kind of expected her to don a fat suit and play Tracy.

No hairspray mention in the 'Inside Edition' mark.
Diana also did a few radio interviews this week, and on 1/19 for 92.5 KISS FM Toledo

Here is kinda summary (i guess you could say) posted by someone at her fansite.

Diana said that she saw a little bit of AI last night and most likely will be watching this year. They were discussing Simon, and Diana said that she still cannot believe how Simon gets away with some of his comments. They went on to ask Diana if Simon was putting on an act and was he different off camera. Diana said that what you see is 99% him. Diana was also asked if she remembers any of Simon’s negative comments to her and she said not really. Then Diana was asked about positive comments. Diana said the only one she remembers was at the beginning of the competition when Simon said that she sounded like a young Christine Agulera. Than Diana said that it was all downhill after that. Diana also remembers that at her audition Paula and Randy put her through but Simon thought she was ridiculous. Diana also mentioned that she felt that 30 to 40 percent, of the people who audition, come back every year and some even go from city to city.

They then talked about Diana’s USO tour and Diana mentioned how much she loved doing it. Diana said that she was a little apprehensive, at first, of going into a war zone. Diana went on to say that General Pace and his staff were wonderful and that she felt very safe. Finally she mentioned that she was playing the part of Penny Pingleton in Hairspray on Broadway and that she was still working on her 2nd CD. They also asked Diana about if being on Broadway was the way she wanted to go. Diana said that she wanted to build a solid career for the next 40 years instead of just being known for now.

She was on this morning at around 9:30am. She came out and sat down with Steve Edwards, Jillian and I forget the other girls name. Anyway, they were really happy to see her. They sat there and watched clips from last nights idol. They asked her briefly about her experience during idol, etc. She told them how excited she was to be in HAIRSPRAY. She said that she was looking for longevity in her career. They also talked about the USO tour...

hopefully someone at that Diana site posts video of Good Day La, lol... Now with the 'hype' of Hairspray...

I think one reason it is being 'hyped' is not just because she was on 'Idol' but, because she never did any other interviews about USO Tour, now She is with talking about joining 'Hairspray' for a short period. Diana was in the press a few times last year talking about 'Season 4' of Idol...[which she was quoted in several news sources], and now she is again with this new season. So, i think it's mainly a build up of USO/AI5/Hairspray... It should also be said for SOME reason, when the USO article (about her going) came out, her web searches soared through the roof.
Which i'm sure media outlets saw, and is one reason they made sure to mention 'Hairspray'.
