See this next week. Has anyone caught it yet? Thoughts?
It's a nice set, but I found the entire thing tedious. The characters didn't behave believably, whiplashing between virulent hate for someone to being apologetic at the drop of a hat. Lots of screaming without a proper emotional ramp up to justify it. Lots of repeating the same conflict with mildly different dialog. I'm also not a fan of the (very minor plot point.. the play spent less than a minute on it)
sexual assault we casually witness that felt dropped in out of nowhere and immediately brushed aside without having been properly addressed (to say nothing of the fact that the perpetrator was mostly harmless comic relief to that point - for them to be used in this way reeked of a desperation on the part of the playwright).
I'm very puzzled that the NYT found this praiseworthy yet gave Swing State, IMO a devastatingly good work that treads in the same waters, a mixed review.
