From the link:

"We tried to send out a production that had the same quality as the Broadway show, with the full Broadway set and everything, and the current market on the road can't support that," producer Marty Bell told Playbill.com. "So, we have to downsize the physical production so that it's easier to load-in and easier to travel, and go to an Equity tier contract."

notice "full Broadway set"...so as far as I can tell, this is almost exactly what was seen on Broadway set-wise. Not sure how or why anyone would have dubbed the set bland. I mean...it even turns as Freddie mentions during the show.

well the tour set was "sturdied up" a bit to begin with, less jewels so they pieces could travel, so yes it was bland in comparison

"Grease," the fourth revival of the season, is the worst show in the history of theater and represents an unparalleled assault on Western civilization and its values. - Michael Reidel
