Does anyone else think that the song "The Phantom of the Opera" sounds like disco with that hilarious drumbeat?

My friend introduced my to the music from Phantom several years ago. After hearing "The Music of the Night" and "All I Ask of You", I decided to not hear anymore until I saw the show. I didn't want to get Michael Crawford's voice imbedded in my head and go see someone with a lesser performance and be slightly disappointed. He had played the "The Phantom of the Opera" on his computer for me, but I thought it was a bad re-mix someone had done. When I got to the theatre and finally saw the show, I heard, "Christine! AAAAAAngel!" then electronic music and the ridiculous drum machine, and I burst into laughter. I got many stares.

The best arrangement of that number I have heard is on a cheap CD called "The Elegance of Andrew Lloyd Webber". It's several of his songs arranged for piano and strings. NO DRUMS. It sounded like a really dark and tense tango. I like it much better than the original version.

on the movie soundtrack there is a really funny double-clap thing that almost makes it sound like 80s pop

I agree. Watching the movie, that ludicrous beat killed off all sense of the period that had been so painstakingly established.
