Posted: 7/9/08 at 7:43pmI got to see this show on my trip to New York. I was impressed with the first ten minutes. I quite enjoyed some of the new songs (except for the horrid song they have Kerchak to sing, you know that sun and moon song). My problem with the show is exactly what everybody else said. It was the book. It was HORRIBLE. There was almost no conflict whatsoever. Just Tarzan singing over and over again "who am i, what am i going to do" blah blah blah. The villain was utterly useless and didn't do anything whatsoever. Act I ended so abruptly. I was like "what he hell happened.. he met jane and that was it?" This show had the makings of a hit but for some reason it fell flat. I don't know who is to blame but I really think they should have opened out of town or something.

The first song was exciting, then it went downhill. You could feel a vaccuum of energy in the theatre during the show, though the cast was talented and working hard. Inept is a word that came to mind while I was watching it, and I would say it is the worst show I've ever seen on Broadway or on tour.
My favorite was Chestor Gregory. I have never seen anyone work so hard to pull laughs from lines with so little humor.
I linked below to a column I wrote on the show last year. I go into more details on my thoughts on the show there.

I did not see the show, but I have the cast recording and would like to make some comments on that.
I thought about 60-70% of the music was fairly good. But two things really irked me. First, there are ways to give songs a "jungley feeling" without using those damned drums. By the end of the album I was like "If I hear a drum one more time..." And the second thing is that British people for the most part DO NOT sing with a British accent. I don't know if Disney decided to do that because they thought audience members would forget Jane was British or whatever, but I found it very irritating. And I found the endings of the "up beat" songs very under-whelming.

Posted: 7/9/08 at 8:54pmI liked the show. I echo the sentiments of everyone saying the opening was amazing. The effects and music were great, but if only they could have kept it up. It just died down after that. All of the performers were amazing, and the songs weren't bad. What made it fail was the book. A giant spider randomly trapping Jane? Young Tarzan being sent away for making a pointy stick? This is why the show ultimately failed. Also, the set would have been great if the had furthered the concept. But as a whole, the show was mediocre to bad.

It was phil collins... expect drums...
I loved the show. It's the show that opened me up to Broadway. The cast could not have been a better group of people. The script was good... the music was amazing.... the set was very creative.... i thought the way they did the ape movements and the set was very... good, interesting. You have to realize how hard that is.... cause it really is hard...
Amazing show.... amazing

Posted: 8/1/08 at 10:44pmI felt that after the first ten minuets the show fel flat. Considering that this is Disney we are talking about, they did have the chance to make it good. I remember hearing about how they didn't want to do an out of town try out with this show. That is something that the show needed even more the Mermaid did. I remember hearing a director of a show I was working on talk about how his freind was involved with this show in some way. He was saying that most of the cast and crew and people in the pit were literally checking off the days until their contracts were up. The show must have been that bad if the people working on it were literally counting down the days until they were done with it.

i dont know about the contract thing. i've talked to people from the cast who will disagree with that. besides at least its a job. i dont believe Jenn was like that, she talked to me about Tarzan. Then Dylan Riley Snyder who I know wasnt like that. He enjoyed it....
i cant really gurantee anyone else.

Posted: 8/2/08 at 11:34pmI'm sorry, but Josh was horribly miscast in this show. Their main problem was they didn't understand the show. Tarzan is suppose to be this dashing leading man. He should have been masculine and more of a baritone - think Matt Bogart. He is playing the alpha male. Add to that the fact that book was boring and the show really didn't have much to say, and you get a mess. The Act 1 closer was a cute song, but it's not exactly a closer. It didn't make me think "oh, wow, what's going to happen next."

Personally I thought Josh Strickland was amazingly cast, had a great voice and nailed the physicality of the role.
I think that if it is retooled for the "tour" or whatever is going on in Atlanta, it could work better.
