I saw this last night. so worth the drive all the way from Ohio! The vocalists were in fine form. I hadn't heard Stephanie Block or Peter Lockyer before, although I knew them by reputation and their theater creds. They were quite good but each blew me away with one particular song, Stephanie with her powerful "Pirate Queen" number "Woman" and Peter with a beautiful rendition of "Bring him home" that reminded me a lot of Colm Wilkinson. They contributed a nice love duet from "The Pirate Queen" and his "Martin Guerre" solo was impressive. Marie Zamora (Madame Alain Boublil) did a lovely "I saw him once", making you wish the song had not been cut from Les Miz, and her Marie Antoinette aria, "le petit matin" from "The French Revolution" made me want to hear that whole score. Terrence Mann and Lea Salonga stole the show, though. Lea sang and looked gorgeous! (Time is being so kind to her, let's hope it continues) her voice was in perfect shape and she was so dramatically affecting in the cut number, "Too much for one heart" from Miss Saigon. She opened her part of the evening with a touching "I'd give my life for you". She and Stephanie did "I dreamed a dream" as a pop duet--a little "Glee"-like but they didn't kill the song. Lea also did "On my own" as a duet with Marie Zamora, who sang the first half of the piece in French. Terrence Mann, at 60, is still in command of one of the finest baritone voices in musical theatre. He showed a lot of range in doing 3 songs in roles he had not sung onstage--he would have made a cynical but amusing Engineer as he demonstrated in "The American dream" from Miss Saigon, he gave a powerfully emotional performance of "Bui doi" to open the show and he camped it up hilariously with Stephanie Block as his pickpocketing madame in "Master of the House". Maybe when he's done with Javert, he can play Thenardier? But as expected he brought down the house with "Stars". The Les Miz section was the best part of the show with the soloists (aided greatly by the outstanding Indianapolis Symphony Chorus) doing a great job trying to act like a cast of thirty or so, especially in ensemble numbers, like "At the end of the day" and "One day more". The Symphony Orchestra was magnificent--so supportive of the singers and giving a lush, rich sound to these scores that are often done with smaller orchestras or pianos. The overture to "The pirate queen" was particularly lovely with its Irish themes and dance music. The conductor was not only in tune with his players but showed a lively personality in his banter with the singers and the audience. They had scripted commentary between pieces giving backround stories about particular songs or shows. The highlight at the end of the concert was seeing Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schonberg themselves come out for a bow with the conductor and soloists and then they all sang "Do you hear the people sing" together. Overall a very worthwhile and enjoyable evening!
I saw this Friday and can confirm everything Queen of the Night says. It was a delightful evening of new and familiar Boublil-Schonberg material. Lea Salonga's voice sounds as powerful and vibrant as ever, her "Too Much For One Heart" was truly heartbreaking. The material from "The Pirate Queen" also came off very well. I believe that additional "Do You Hear The People Sing" concerts are planned with various Pops orchestras next year, look out for them.
Anyone know if this is the same cast that will be in Baltimore in April? Have tickets already and will be driving down there. Can't find any info about cast on website.... Help! Looking specifically for Stephanie J. Block and Terrence Mann....
Thanks!
You may be able to ask Stephanie via Twitter. https://twitter.com/#!/StephanieJBlock
Thanks - I actually tried that... Nothing yet but I'm not so sure how much she twitters....
Found the cast by calling and them emailing me... Was hoping for Stephanie J. Block, Lea Salonga, and Terrence Mann - at least Terrence will be there...

Per inquiry with the producers, it looks like they are planning a series of concerts in the Australasia region. Michael Ball seems confirmed for the Shanghai concert only at this point, as he does have a pretty busy schedule.
